摘要:
Earlier studies of laboratory‐induced verbal slips have demonstrated the existence of a “prearticulatory editing” phase of speech/language production, the supposed function of which is to evaluate the linguistic integrity of phoneme sequences destined for articulation, allowing articulation of linguistically legitimate sequences, and preventing articulation of linguistically anomalous sequences. Freud's view of verbal slips as a manifestation of speakers' private internal states, these internal states resulting from interactions of personality and situational influences, may be viewed as a prediction that prearticulatory editing involves personality/situation‐based semantic criteria. The prediction was tested and supported. Implications are di

摘要:
This paper reports four tests of Berger's role enactment model of persuasion. The model is addressed to generalizing counter attitudinal communication to social situations when persons find themselves encoding belief‐discrepant messages. This encoding takes the form of role enactments which lead to attitude change. Crucial to predicting from the model are variables identifying the communicator's self‐perceived role enactment competence (SPREC), post performance evaluation (PPE), information, and role involvement. Studies 1 and 2 found no support for predictions concerning the predictive utility of information but did point to the importance of SPREC and PPE in assessing post enactment attitude. Study 3 tested a re‐conceptualization of Berger's model and confirmed a multivariate relationship among SPREC, PPE, message intensity, and attitude change. In Study 4 ego involvement was conceptually linked to role involvement, and results confirmed the SPREC, PPE, involvement, message intensity, and attitude change relatio

摘要:
Interactants are strategic goal seekers in their interpersonal communication. However, to date, research has concentrated almost exclusively on the communicative strategies by which actors achieve a goal of relationship initiation. Relationship disengagement occupies an important motivational force, as well. This study initiated exploration of the communicative strategies by which actors disengage their relationships, focusing in particular on the verbal strategy of self‐disclosure. Undergraduate volunteers were exposed to one of four hypothetical scenarios: Respondent Intent (Maintain or Disengage) and Other's Intent (Maintain or Disengage). Twenty Likert‐type items of willingness to self‐disclose on a variety of topics constituted the dependent measures and were clustered into three primary factors. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed that respondents were less willing to self‐disclose when they desired to disengage the relat

摘要:
This paper attempts to explore the process of impression formation in initial interactions as a function of an individual's communicative style. Specifically, an attempt is made to identify relations between communication style and observers'perceptions of an interactant's interpersonal attractiveness and communicative effectiveness. Current literature pertaining to communicative competence and literature pertaining to communicator style are reviewed, and an attempt is made to demonstrate their interconnectedness. A precise method for the measurement of communicative/interactive style is described. Subsequently, a study designed to empirically assess the relation between style and perceived attractiveness and communicative effectiveness, in which the above measurement system was employed, is also described. The results indicate that there are at least two interactive styles which are related to two types of perceived attractiveness and effectiveness. The implications of the findings and some suggestions for future inquiry in the areas of communicative style and social competence are discussed.

摘要:
This paper attempts to clarify the conceptualization of interpersonal power dimensions and offers a relational‐level definition and measure of dominance. A distinction is made between control movements indicating domineering message behavior and control patterns of dominance. The findings support (1) that domineeringness and dominance are separate control variables, and (2) that different dyadic patterns of satisfaction and interaction style are associated with these two dimension

摘要:
This study was an attempt to replicate and extend the findings of previous research which explored the cognitive dimensions used by children to differentiate television characters. Results indicate that humor remains the primary attribute that children use to differentiate television characters, although this characteristic does not seem to be important in children's modeling decisions. Attractiveness and activity remain secondary attributes but also discriminate between male and female children in predicting identification with the characters. These findings are similar to those of the original study. Sex represents an additional important attribute for both sexes in differentiating the characters but is important only for female decisions about which characters are appropriate role models.
