摘要:
Although communication theory provides a significant rationale for the relationship of messages to both attitudes and behaviors, relatively few researchers have examined systematically the effects of communication on attitude statementsandrelated behaviors. Those studies which have assessed communication effects on both classes of behavior have yielded conflicting findings concerning verbal report‐overt behavior correspondence, as well as the role of communication and mediating variables in underlying attitude‐verbal report‐overt act relationships. It is argued that inconclusive results have been the product of: (1) inadequate theoretical formulation of the relationship of attitudes to behaviors, and of communication to both attitudes and behaviors; (2) inadequate conceptual and operational definitions of these and other relevant variables; (3) inadequate control of factors influencing the relationships. Theoretical reformulations are suggested in each of these areas, hypotheses are offered concerning conditions for verbal report‐overt behavior compliance correspondence, and a path analytic model is proposed for empiric

摘要:
The purpose of the present series of studies was to investigate the process of proactive and retroactive attribution in ongoing communication transactions. This objective was accomplished by studying the ways in which information disclosed early in the relationship is used (1) to form predictions concerning the probable attitudes of the other person, and (2) to explain subsequent communication behavior as the relationship progresses. Experiment I revealed that perceived background similarity led to predictions of attitude similarity. Experiments II and III found that consistency between early information and later behavior led to the utilization of early information to explain later behavior. These findings were discussed in terms of uncertainty reduction during initial interaction.

摘要:
Two studies are reported which indicate that high communication apprehensives are perceived as less interpersonally attractive than low communication apprehensives by members of the opposite sex. Effects of physical appearance and attitude similarity on interpersonal attraction, consistent with previous research, were also observed. It was also found that, in general, the more communication apprehensive the subject the less the subject was attracted to other people.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to describe and perform an exploratory analysis of a conceptual model for task‐oriented small group development. The four phases of the model were defined as:latency, adaptation, integration, and goal‐attainment. To test assumptions of phasic development, data from minute‐byminute observations made on 30 groups of undergraduate women were collapsed into quarters and submitted to a one‐way multivariate analysis of variance for the purpose of making a priori nonorthogonal comparisons. Results from the initial a priori comparisons and subsequent data‐snooping techniques did not confirm the existence of four sequential phases in group development. Results did disclose a pattern of development that began with an extendedadaptationphase covering most of the first half of group interaction. Groups characteristically shifted into a partially definedintegrationphase where affectivity and neutrality themes appeared to follow each other. Goal‐attainment themes were most prominent during the final quarter of

摘要:
This study deals with one aspect of the communication behavior of voters who voted a straight ticket and those who split their ticket in the 1972 election in Michigan. In an election situation it is assumed that information about the candidates helps the individual make a decision how to vote. Paying attention to the candidates in the mass media is an important means of obtaining information. It was thus hypothesized that if an individual exposes himself to mass media information on only one party's candidates, he is less likely to split his ticket than if he exposes himself to candidates of both parties. It was found that the higher the attention level of the individual to all the candidates, the more he tended to split his ticket. Also, the less his attention was selective to candidates of only one party, the more he tended to split his ticket.

摘要:
This study investigated whether females are more distractable than males in competing aural message situations. Ss were asked to listen to a tape which played two short stories simultaneously. They were instructed to listen to one story and to ignore the second. Ss were then tested on the story to which they were instructed to attend, and their scores were compared with male and female control groups to determine which sex group had extracted the most information from the listening session. It was concluded that males extracted more information and were thus less distracted.
