摘要:
AbstractA two‐dimensional hybrid method for solving elastoplastic problems in engineering is presented by coupling two existing methods, namely, the boundary element method and the characteristics method. The formulation of this method is presented, as well as an excellent procedure for the determination of the boundary between elastic and plastic regions. It is shown not only that this method is a powerful and accurate method for evaluating the shape and extent of the plastic region around rock caverns, which is of prime importance for the construction of rock caverns, but also applicable to a given range of the initial stress field ratio where only compressive failure occurs. Then, some typical examples are solved in order to check the accuracy of the solution by this method. Furthermore, its successful applications are presented and discussed to determine the shape and the extent of the plastic regions around parallel, circular and rectangular opening

摘要:
AbstractThis paper seeks to reconstruct the parameters of elastic layered media such as P‐wave velocity, S‐wave velocity, density and thickness from the multioffset seismic reflection data. Since the data are highly non‐linear to the low‐wavenumber components, the non‐linear waveform inversion method, with the aid of generalized ray theory, is proposed to solve this problem in space–time domain. As opposed to the layer‐stripping method, the present method attempts to invert all layer parameters simultaneously, thus reducing the cumulative errors resulting from the upper layers. The parameters are inverted by minimizing the weighted square error between the observed data and the calculated data of the layered model, the optimization of which is based on the quasi‐Newton method. In synthetic tests, we find that the inverted results are good when the variation of parameters between layers is not too large. The modified method for large variation of parameters is first to fix those of deeper layers and neglect the signals reflected from them, then recover some other parameters simultaneously until those of upper layers attain a stable value, and finally, invert all parameters simultaneously. The results so obtained show a significant improvement. This method was tested to be stable in the presence of noise

摘要:
AbstractAn algorithm is outlined for the implicit integration of isotropic plasticity models for an arbitrary choice of mixed stress and strain control variables. Drained as well as undrained behaviour is considered. The closest‐point‐projection method in conjunction with a completely strain‐driven format is used in a core algorithm. In the drained case strain response variables are determined via iterations to satisfy equilibrium of prescribed and calculated stresses that correspond to the strain response variables. In the undrained case, on the other hand, strains and pore pressure are determined via simultaneous iterations to satisfy equilibrium and the incompressibility condition. The algorithm is applied to a new generalized cam‐clay model, and various iteration techniques are assessed. In particular, Newton iterations which employ the matrix of algorithmic tangent stiffness moduli are shown to compete favourably with more conventional

摘要:
AbstractAn analysis of coupled heat and moisture movement in unsaturated soil in terms of the fundamental potentials for flow is examined. The approach adopted is based on the assumption that the total potential for liquid flow consists of two components, the elevation and the capillary potential. The fundamental potentials employed in the work are, therefore, temperature and capillary potential. The full theoretical formulation of the problem is presented, together with full details of the solution algorithm employed. Spatial discretization is achieved via the use of the finite element method, with the time‐varying behaviour described by a finite difference technique. Soil parameter variations as functions of both temperature and moisture content are included in a one‐dimensional approach. The work is applied to a practical engineering problem, namely heat and mass transfer in the upper layers of a soil stratum. This problem is of importance to the utilities, since many services are buried in this zone. Material parameters obtained from an associated programme of experimental work are employed. Moisture content and temperature profiles indicating the extent and rate of penetration of drying and heating fronts are produ
