AbstractTwo surfactants, one containing a six and the other containing a nine unit polyoxyethylene glycol side chain attached to p‐(1,1,3,3‐tetramethylbutyl) phenol (TOPOH), were prepared with specific14C‐labeling. The radioactive label was introduced into the first ethylene oxide unit attached to the aryl moiety, TOPOCH2*CH2(OCH2CH2)nOH, by coupling chloroacetic‐14C‐l acid with TOPOH. A 4‐step reaction scheme was utilized in the synthesis, and all reactions gave excellent yields except for the final Williamson coupling reaction. A competing elimination reaction occurred in the final reaction to afford a vinylic by‐product, TOPOCHCHCl, which was identified by spectroscopic methods. AbstractTwo molecularly homogeneous nonionic detergents with specific‐14C labeling were prepared. Polyoxyethylene glycols of six and nine ethylene oxide units were coupled to 2,6,8‐trimethyl‐4‐nonanol (TMNOH). The radioactive label was in the first ethylene oxide unit attached to the alkyl moiety, TMNOCH2*CH2(OCH2CH2)nOH. All react ions employed in this synthesis gave good to excellent results. Two routes were developed for the reduction of an alkoxyacetic acid intermediate to the corresponding alcohol, and both methods gave excellent yields.
