摘要:
AbstractIn order to keep our list of these societies appearing in the back pages of The Laryngoscope, up‐to‐date, we have deleted all societies for which we have not received a list of new officers within the last year.If Societies wish to have their names, lists of officers, time and place of meetings listed again, please send us this up‐to‐date information and we shall be pleased to publish it.It would assist us greatly in keeping this list up‐to‐date if the secretaries of the various societies would send us this information as soon as a new slate of officers is elected in their respective societies; also furnish date and place

摘要:
AbstractINTRODUCTION.Natural science made a big step forward when it was assumed that every phenomenon has a cause. The causality principle completely modified our daily thinking and started to interconnect different phenomena occurring in nature. To find the cause of every happening in nature was the aim of logical thinking. It was quite obvious from the beginning that every phenomenon probably had several causes; but it was further assumed that it was generally one cause which outdid all the others in producing the phenomenon.

摘要:
AbstractVelopharyngeal incompetence may be either congenital or acquired in origin. Congenital defects not only exist as an obvious cleft in the palate but the incompetence may also be a result of more subtle defects such as submucous cleft, platybasia, congenital short palate, or cervical spine deformity. Acquired defects are usually more obvious. Postinflammatory or postirradiation cicatrization and defects after surgical resection are the usual causes, but palate paralysis secondary to neurologic disease and palatal incompetency following adenoidectomy, should also be considered.

摘要:
AbstractMany of us in clinical medicine, who deal with cancer, often become frustrated with the way malignancies behave in different individuals, and even the change of behavior of a specific malignancy in the same host. This reflects a lack of knowledge on our part of the basic abnormality in cancer. Herein are reviewed some of the present concepts which investigators are exploring, in order to unravel the mystery, or mysteries of cancer.

摘要:
AbstractSurgical repair of recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries has received renewed experimental attention in recent years.1,2,3This work has been motivated by the considerable disability which vocal cord paralysis continues to cause, particularly regarding phonation, aspiration on swallowing, and difficulty in breathing. Interest in direct nerve repair has also evolved out of the frequent failure to achieve complete rehabilitation of the laryngeal functions with the usual surgical procedures of tracheostomy, arytenoidectomy and arytenopexy, and vocal fold injection and displacement techniques.

摘要:
AbstractWound healing is like a diamond with many facets. Newer techniques and methods are available to study some of the problems of wound healing. This is a highly complex subject with so many ramifications that only a few will be presented. Throughout the world, many laboratories are investigating the fundamental aspects of repair and regeneration. This starts at the cell level and terminates with the healed wound. In 1968, at a Centennial Symposium on Repair and Regeneration, at the University of California in San Francisco, there was assembled a group of pathologists, biochemists, bioengineers, enzymologists, and surgeons. All attempted to contribute something to the advancement of the new frontiers of study of wound healing. These proceedings will be published early in 1969. A study in wound repair requires consideration of the activity of the epithelium and the connective tissue beneath it. These two systems interact and inform each other of their status and the requirements of each other.

摘要:
AbstractNew methods of teaching are in vogue. The vigorous growth of medical faculties in North America and Europe has left in its wake thousands of hours of new teaching time, brilliant concepts which can be translated into classroom and bedside instruction only by hard work. It has given rise to a search for new methods of presentation of facts and ideas.

摘要:
AbstractINTRODUCTION. In 1968, in the United States alone, 860 people died each day of cancer. This amounts to over 300,000 deaths a year. In 1969, it is estimated that over 915,000 persons will suffer from cancer and 600,000 new cases will be diagnosed.1Except for cancer of the lung, pancreas and leukemia, cancer rates in general are leveling. Recent declines in the incidence of cancer of the stomach and uterus are apparently being partially replaced by increases in malignancies of the lip, tongue, floor of mouth, pharynx and larynx. The significance of cancers in these areas becomes apparent when one recalls that over 14,000 people will die of these lesions this year. Not only is there a steady increase in the overall number of cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, but in the last 10 years, the incidence in females has increased by 8 percent and this alarming rise appears to be continuing. We, then, must increase not only our vigilance but also our armentarium to treat these devastating malignancies. The basic premise should be twofold: to cure the patient of his malignancy and to preserve as much physiologic function as possible but in so doing, not compromise the first premise.

摘要:
AbstractThe diagnosis of food allergy remains one of the infrequently solved problems in medicine; furthermore, its importance is only occasionally recognized, and I emphasize the statement of Dr. William Kaufman in 195514that no physician can estimate with any degree of accuracy how much ill health and human misery result from ailments caused by undiagnosed food allergy. From the large and varied sampling of patients who consulted him in his practice of internal medicine during the preceding 12 years, he could say with confidence that most practicing physicians see many patients almost daily who present themselves with a wide variety of complaints, which are caused by unrecognized food allergies.
