摘要:
Plasma norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (EPI), dopamine (DPM), dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH), and renin were measured in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. The predialysis NE, EPI and DPM concentrations were lower than normal at 29, 7.3 and 4.8 pg/ml, respectively. The NE level increased in the erect posture to 100 pg/ml at 30 min. Levels were also measured during the postdialysis period, and were approximately the same as in normal subjects, but lower than previously published values for patients undergoing hemodialysis. In the predialysis period, NE and renin correlated upon assumption of the upright posture. It is concluded that maintenance hemodialysis can be carried out without a major distortion of the plasma catecholamine levels

摘要:
The use of radioactive calcium kinetics as an index of the deposition of calcium in renal tissue was evaluated. Following the intravenous administration of 47Ca, the activity of calcium in the urine was significantly lower (p < 0.01) than serum activity in uremic but not in control subjects. It is suggested that the cause for the abnormal calcium kinetics in advanced renal failure is the increased calcium content in the renal tissue.

We performed a prospective study on 68 subjects with biopsy-proven glomerulonephritis using a discriminant analysis of 12 clinical and laboratory characteristics. Among these, the selectivity of proteinuria, the presence of hematuria and the plasma level of C3 proved to be the most useful. An equation based on these three variables discriminated without overlap between 17 patients with minimal change glomerulonephritis (MCGN) and 30 patients with either membranoproliferative or rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. However, some overlap existed between MCGN and focal sclerosis or membranous glomerulonephritis. In addition, the formula seems to identify steroid-resistant patients with MCGN.

摘要:
The local cutaneous inflammatory response to DNCB sensitization was positive in only 35% of 20 uremic patients, and the delayed skin reaction was positive in only 15%. The reaction to DNCB challenge was markedly delayed in some patients. Improved response to DNCB re-challenge followed levamisole administration in only 16% of the patients and was not associated with a rise in blood lymphocytes.

The effect of PGI2, the principal metabolite of arachidonic acid in mammalian arterial and venous tissues, on renal function and renin secretion was investigated in anesthetized, hypophysectomized dogs undergoing a maximal water diuresis. PGI2 in a concentration of 0.04 µg/kg/min significantly increased urine flow and urinary sodium and potassium excretion in the absence of changes in glomerular filtration rate or blood pressure. The fact that PGI2 significantly increased free water clearance and distal delivery of sodium and inhibited distal fractional reabsorption of glomerular filtrate is suggestive of an effect on proximal as well as distal sites of the nephron. PGI2 increased renin secretion rates threefold. This promotion of renin release may have been caused by an increase of ion flux across the macula densa or by an increase in renal blood flow. On a molar basis, PGI2 is about 10 times more potent than PGE2 with regard to natriuresis, diuresis and renin release when studied under identical conditions. Thus, PGI2 may be the major prostaglandin involved in the regulation of salt and water excretion

摘要:
The morphological aspects of Proteus mirabilis clearance from the urinary tract of experimentally infected mice were investigated. For this purpose, two groups of mice were compared: a group infected with the bacterium and a group that had just recovered from the infection. Differences between the two groups were found in extent of bladder and kidney inflammation, depth of infiltration into the bladder wall, and in the increment of bladder volume. There was no clear-cut difference between the two groups in number of lymphocytes and monocytes, but the number of granulocytes was significantly lower in the bladder and kidneys of the recently healed animals. Likewise, the plasma cells were fewer in healed animals than in infected ones, the difference being statistically significant for bladders and on the verge of significance for kidneys.

Micropuncture and clearance studies were performed on normal untreated and polyuric lithium chloride treated rats (10–12 days). A persistent hypernatremic state quickly developed in the polyuric lithium treated rats during hydropenia resulting from an increased urinary loss of water over sodium chloride, as the fractional excretion of sodium remained at control levels. Superficial proximal tubule and loop of Henle fluid reabsorption was depressed by 8 and 17%, respectively, in lithium-treated rats during this period. By contrast, water reabsorption in the distal tubule and collecting rystem was significantly increased in the lithium animals, being 27% of the filtered load compared with 20% in normal sats. These results suggest that the urinary-concentrating defect induced by lithium treatment is due primarily to a depression of proximal tubule and possibly loop of Henle function, and that water reabsorption within the distal nephron may in fact be augmented; thus it is unlikely that the action of antidiuretic hormone is significantly impaired. Marked phosphaturia and hypocalciuria were also noted in the lithium-treated rat
