摘要:
Simultaneous measurements of the plasma concentrations of renin, renin-substrate, angiotensin II and aldosterone were made in seven patients with the nephritic syndrome and in five normal subjects studied under the same controlled conditions. Plasma renin-substrate concentration was found to be reduced in some patients. Although plasma renin concentration was frequently elevated, plasma angiotensin II and aldosterone concentrations were generally within the normal range.

摘要:
The influence of haemodialysis on insulin-induced human growth hormone (HGH) secretion was investigated in 14 patients with acute renal insufficiency. In non-dialysed patients significantly elevated HGH levels were found after insulin stimulation as compared with 16 healthy subjects. The mean insulin-induced HGH values found in non-dialysed patients were 12.4 (0 min), 50.7 (30 min), 51.3 (60 min) and 25.2 ng/ml (120 min) as compared with 3.7, 18.1, 33.5 and 13 ng/ml, respectively, obtained in normal subjects. Abnormal HGH secretion was improved after dialysis despite persistence of a diminished hypoglycaemic effect of insulin.

Glycoprotein: glycosyl transferase activities of rat kidney were studied after subcutaneous injection of cortisone acetate or folic acid, or both. Whereas cortisone acetate had little effect, large increases in glycoprotein: glycosyl transferase activities were found 42 h after administration of folic acid. At this time, sialic acid transferase levels were about twice control values; collagen: glucosyl and collagen: galactosyl transferase activities were increased about threefold and twofold, respectively ; and fetuin: galactosyl transferase activity was almost fourfold higher than control. Some transferase activities were elevated by 17 h after injection of folate and remained above control values 140 h after injection. Cortisone injection had little effect on the folate-induced enzyme changes. These studies are compared with previous results concerning renal hypertrophy after injected folic acid. Although the results are compatible with a nonspecific increased rate of glycoprotein synthesis required for a newly proliferating cell population, the possibility of a more selective action of folic acid on glycoprotein: glycosyl enzyme activities is considered.

Sodium excretion and proximal tubule function were studied in rats with an aorta-to-vena cava (A-V) fistula using the techniques of micropuncture. 15–28 days after ereation of the fistula, 40% of the rats had developed peripheral edema and ascites. Control rats excreted significantly more sodium in the urine than did the A-V fistula rats. Clearances of inulin and PAH, intrarenal distribution of filtration, and filtration fraction were wholly comparable for the two experimental groups. Also, sodium reabsorption by the proximal tubule was not different for the two groups during either hydropenia or extracellular volume expansion. Transit time through the loop of Henle was prolonged in the A-V rats. The data suggest that an enhanced reabsorption in a distal nephron segment – possibly in the loop of Henle – must play a significant role in sustained salt retention and edema formation of A-V rats. Proximal reabsorption was increased only in ‘acute’ A-V rats (2–6 days after the operation). This alteration of proximal reabsorption does not appear relevant to the chronic state of sodium retention and may be mediated by extracellular fluid volume contraction due to creation of

摘要:
Subcutaneous injection of chloroform to male mice of various strains results in renal tubular necrosis. In contrast, the females do not develop any renal lesions. The purpose of this work was to determine whether in this respect testosterone is noxious and the female hormones protective. Ovariectomized females failed to develop renal tubular necrosis analogically to the intact ones. This means that a lack of female hormones does not endanger these animals. However, chloroform-induced renal tubular necrosis was found in a considerable proportion of ovariectomized mice, if treated with testosterone. Testectomized males appeared to be free of any renal lesions after injection of chloroform. The presence of testosterone in the body seems to be a prerequisite for chloroform-induced renal tubular necrosis.

In the present study the reduction in renal fractional reabsorption of sodium from 99.6 ± 0.2 to 86.0 ± 3.3 % following ECV expansion with isotonic saline in the rat was associated with a small decrease in renal cortical Na-K-ATPase activity from 12.2 ± 0.5 to 10.8 ± 0.6 µmol Pi/mg protein/h and an increase in medullary enzyme activity from 23.3 ± 1.3 to 28.6 ± 1.8 µmol Pi/mg protein/h. In addition, an increase in cortical ATP concentration from 1.21 ± 0.12 to 1.55 ± 0.10 µmol/g wet weight was observed. These alterations resemble renal metabolic changes induced by low dose ouabain and favor the hypothesis that decreased tubular reabsorption of sodium following ECV expansion may be associated with alterations in active sodium

Renal biopsies were performed on 18 patients afflicted with moderately severe or severe rheumatoid arthritis ranging from 20 to 58 years in age and with minimal to mild urine abnormalities. No abnormality was found in 11 cases. Seven biopsies revealed minimal increase in mesangial cells and matrix on light microscopy with focal tubular atrophy in some. Electron microscopy showed slight increase in mesangium, presence of ‘deposits’ in the latter and epithelial cells and fusion of podocytes in several places.
