AbstractThe proportion of residents born in northern Europe best explains the pattern of stomach cancer mortality in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and upper Michigan counties. The settling patterns of Finns, and to a lesser extent of Poles, Norwegians, Danes and Swedes, are strongly associated with county stomach cancer rates. Socio‐economic status and water supply are less significant. Even after socioeconomic status and water supply are factored out, estimated stomach cancer mortality for these populations is still disproportionately high. Other researchers have identified diet as a major risk factor in stomach cancer and as the prime cause of the ethnicity‐stomach cancer association. We suggest that natives shared the stomach cancer risk, perhaps by adopting the“high risk”; diet of the foreign‐born.

AbstractThe major primary and secondary bile acids, cholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, deoxycholic acid, and lithocholic acid, affect the metabolism of one or more of the common substrates used to study the activity of liver drug‐metabolizing enzymes. Included were the mixed function oxidases that metabolize aniline, benzo(a)pyrene, 7‐ethoxy‐coumarin, p‐nitroanisole, aminopyrine, and testosterone. The microsomal epoxide hydrase was stimulated by the bile acids with the exception of chenodeoxycholic acid which was markedly inhibitory. The soluble glutathione‐S‐transferase was inhibited by all four bile acids. The potency of the effects varied with the substrate or bile acid used. These results demonstrate that the presence of bile acids could affect the metabolism of endogenous substrates, carcinogens, and other xenobiotics.

摘要:
AbstractThere is increasing evidence that foodstuffs and human body fluids containing various amounts of thiocyanate and iodide ions, may significantly increase human exposure to carcinogenic N‐nitrosamines by catalyzing their formation in the digestive tract. We have found that both thiocyanate and iodide ions at physiological concentrations have pronounced cumulative catalytic influence on the in vitro formation of N‐methyl‐N‐nitrosaniline (NMNA).
