摘要:
A thin film of aluminum nitride was deposited on Si(111) by reactive rf magnetron sputtering. The sputtering was carried out from a Al target (99.999%purity) in an Ar and N2atmosphere. The films are analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The films were also characterized by transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction.

摘要:
Calcite is a common component of soil and a natural mineral sometimes found in the form of large high quality single crystals. The interactions of calcite with ions in ground water affects their transport in the environment. Consequently, understanding the surface chemistry of calcite is important for environmental remediation research. To establish the nature of a clean calcite surface, single-crystal rhombohedral calcite (CaCO3) was cleaved in vacuum to expose the (101¯4) plane for x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. Survey and multiplex spectra were obtained under standard operating conditions with a Perkin-Elmer Physical Electronics 550 spectrometer. An adventitious carbon peak, from a cleavage surface exposed to the environment, was used to measure surface charging and allow determination of binding energies for calcite C 1s, O 1s, and Ca 2p3/2photopeaks. Two forms of C were observed on the vacuum cleaved specimen: a “carbonate” and a “carbide” peak.

摘要:
The results of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of a CuNi alloy after a 2 keV Ar+ion bombardment are presented. The spectra, covering the range of 200–1270 eV, include both the data as collected, and after correction for the analyzer response function. Quantification is given after application of the Tougaard background correction both with and without use of reference spectra. The alloy is found to be Cu depleted in the surface region which is consistent with previous works [T. Koshikawa, K. Goto, N. Saeki, R. Shimizu, and E. Sugata, Surf. Sci.79, 461 (1979)].

摘要:
Highly oxidized compounds are commonly used as the source of oxygen for the combustion of propellants. Determination of the early reactions and interactions of both oxidizer and fuel increases our understanding of the ignition process. Another critical aspect in propellant technology is safety: the elimination of unexpected initiation, weather combustion or explosion. The approach taken in this laboratory in the study of early reactions is to determine the nature and extent of chemical reaction in response to increasing levels of stimulus. Comparison of damaged materials (damaged below the initiation threshold) to standards permits the identification of the chemical species involved in the early reactions. To that end, control spectra of ammonium perchlorate (the most widely used oxidizer in solid propellants) have been collected from a freshly cleaved single crystal surface. The composition of ammonium perchlorate is NH4ClO4. Atomic concentrations, excluding hydrogen, are Cl 16.6%, N 16.6% and O 66.6%.

摘要:
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze poly(vinyl isobutyl ether), a pure spin cast polymer. This polymer was centrifugally spun cast onto a glass substrate and stored in an UV/ozone cleaned,O-ring sealed aluminum container. The polymer was examined at three different electron takeoff angles to verify homogeneity. Data were collected and atomic compositions calculated with a Hewlett-Packard 5950B ESCA. Measured atomic composition percentages closely matched the expected stoichiometry of the polymer.

摘要:
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze a 1 cm2, 0.13 mm thick coupon of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The material was examined as received from the manufacturer following a cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and trichlorotrifluoroethane. The PTFE coupon was examined with a Hewlett-Packard 5950B ESCA system. Measured atomic composition percentages closely matched the expected stoichiometry of the polymer.
