AbstractHand‐made, charcoal‐containing black powders exhibited higher heats of combustion than commercial black powders; the values were also higher than values previously reported in the literature. However, commercial pellets attained maximum pressure in a closed bomb upon ignition more rapidly and had better physical integrity than the char‐coal‐containing laboratory products. When channel and furnace blacks were used instead of charcoal, pellets with excellent physical integrity were obtained. These products had lower heats of reaction than commercial black powder and also developed maximum pressure in a closed bomb more slowly. Although adding a small amount of water before or during grinding of mixtures of carbon, sulfur, and potassium nitrate did not affect the heat of reaction of the product significantly, this may have caused the density of some of the products to be abnormally low. AbstractIn this second part of a series of publications dealing with the application of the Robbins‐Monro method to the sensitivity testing of explosives, the experimental aspects are treated. The results of an experimental program with a primer drop‐test apparatus confirmed the efficiency which was concluded from the computer simulation study, also for extreme percentage points. Further a method is described to determine the reliability of the outcome after the execution of the Robbins‐Monro process. It is shown that for an efficient application of the Robbins‐Monro method the level distance which can be adjusted should be about 1/2 to 1/3 of the standard deviation (of a normal distribution) dependent on the percentag

AbstractNew mechanical handling system for simulating the handling of explosive powders in the explosives factories have been designed, developed and successfully used for measurements of electrostatic charges under actual working conditions. The results of some of the important initiators using conventional friction/rolling method have been also discussed. The observations indicate that barium styphnate (red) shows positive charge whereas barium styphnate (yellow) shows negative charge.
