AbstractEvidence is given of a fundamental difference between the response of bare explosive to the impact of a flat‐nosed rod, and the response to a sphere or round‐nosed rod. For relatively insensitive explosives such as Composition B, a spherical projectile, in contrast to a flat‐nosed rod, can have a range of impact velocities that produce a blast output which falls short of the output expected from a full detonation. It is postulated that this effect is caused by the divergent flow behind the initial impact shock created by the sphere. Without such divergence it is assumed that these impacts would produce full detonation. Consequently thc critical energy criterion for spherical impacts should be applied to the non‐reaction/reaction boundary and not the reaction/detonation boundary. This is shown to give constant values of critical energy for different sizes of sphere impacting the same explosive, and to give similar energy values to those obtained from impacts of flat‐n

AbstractThermal explosion characteristics of lead(II) 2,4‐dinitroresorcinate in comparison with the parent compound 2,4‐dinitroresorcinol has been reinvestigated by mass Spectrometry using fast scan technique. For lead dinitroresorcinate, fragment ions spanned over m/z range 55–244 contrary to the reported range 2–74 by previous researchers. The decomposition pathways are predicted by analysing the fragmentation patterns. Lead, adduct ions and unusual ions were detected. AbstractSeven amine salts of 3‐nitro‐1,2,4‐triazol‐5‐one(NTO) have been prepared from inexpensive raw materials. The ammonium, ethylenediamine. hydrazine, and guanidinium homolog salts of NTO were synthesized; their methods of preparation are described. Results from initial characterization and small‐scale sensitivity tests indicate that these compounds are thermally stable and moderately insensitive to impact. AbstractA unique tracer evaluation facility has been put into operation at the Defence Research Establishment, Valcartier (DREV), in order to characterize tracer compositions loaded in 5.56 mm envelopes. The effect of rotational speeds up to 300,000 rpm on the performances of two tracer compositions and the standard Belgian L‐110 tracer was studied in this facility. The trace duration decreased substantially with any increase in spin speed. The luminous output was observed generally to be weak at low rotational speeds and to increase with any rise in spin over 150 krpm. The formation of a convex surface of combustion in the composition under spin and the degree of obstruction of the projectile mouth by the combustion residues are postulated to explain such behaviour

AbstractThe physical and chemical characteristics of green signal pyrotechnic mix, before and after destabilization caused by the action of increased humidity at different temperatures, were determined. Data obtained by the means of X‐ray diffraction. IR spectroscopy and adiabatic calorimetry were compared with the results acquired by measuring functional characteristics (the dominant wavelength and the colour hue of the emitted light, the intensity of the emission and the rate of burning). Comparision of all of these results points out to the very close relationship between the X‐ray diffraction data and the function of the signal mix. Chemical changes, leading to the disuse of the examinated mix, were recognized as Mg(OH)2, BaCO3and Ba(NO2)2formation with concomittant decrease in Mg and Ba(NO3)2content. AbstractA new high performance liquid chromatography method has been developed for the analysis of ethyl centralite (EC) and its derivatives found in Australian gun propellants.
