AbstractExperiments on the initiation of high explosive charges in contact with a barrier or separated from it by a 15 mm air gap or a 2 mm acrylic glass layer have been performed utilising a simultaneous framing and streak camera. With increasing barrier thickness the shaped charge jet is increasingly consumed.

AbstractThe acetolysis of hexamethylenetetramine (HA) to form 1,3,5‐triacetyl‐1,3,5‐triazacyclohexane (TRAT) has studied by NMR. It was found that this reaction experienced two different courses. HA turned to TRAT through the intermediate 3,7‐diacetyl‐1,3,5,7‐tetraaza‐[3.3.1]‐bicyclononace (DAPT), and HA converted at first to an intermediate M1, which gave TRAT through another intermediate M2in the presence of water. AbstractThe crystal structure of trinitroethylnitroguanidine (TNENG) was determined by X‐ray diffraction for comparison with nitroguanidine (NGu). Pertinent crystal parameters are: orthorhombic, Pbca, a = 14.611 (7) Å, b = 11.973 (5) Å, c = 11.452 (5) Å, V = 2003 (2) Å3, Z = 8, D(calcd) = 1.758 g/cm3, R(F) = 6.30%, R(wF) = 6.58%. A hydrogen bonded network like that present in NGu is largely responsible for the lattice cohesion of TNENG. The IR spectrum of the condensed phase using slow thermolysis, and the gas phase using slow and fast thermolysis, suggests that parallel CN and NN bond fission reactions take place in both TNENG and NGu. The calculated and experimental values of the impact sensitivity of TNENG and NGu are compared. We conclude that the impact sensitivity and the thermal decomposition of TNENG are dominated by the characteristics of the C(NO2)3group. AbstractDes publications récentes sur la sensibilité à l'impact et la sensibilité thermique des explosifs polynitrés aromatiques sont commentées.En sensibilité à I'impact, Kamlet et Adolph ont remarqué l'existence de deux familles d'explosifs pour lesquelles h 50% est une fonction linéaire du bilan en oxygène OB100. Ces deux corrélations peuvent se ramener à une seule si dans le calcul du bilan en oxygéne on ne tient pas compte des CH en a des groups NO2. Pour les groupements attachés au cycle benzénique , on peut calculer des incréments de sensibilité.En sensibilité thermique, les résultats de Zeman et ceux d'Hutchinson, Krishna Mohan et Millar peuvent être interprétés. L'knergie EAd'activation de décomposition thermique est une fonction linéare de log A, logarithme du facteur préexponentiel. AbstractIt is shown that statistically significant relationships exist between impact sensitivity and molecular electronegativity for several classes of organic high explosives. These include polynitroaromatic and polynitroaliphatic molecules. The correlations closely follow previous results which utilize the idea of “trigger linkages” (C–NO2, N–NO2or O–NO2) and oxygen balance. However, the present work provides the possibility of establishing a closer relation between impact sensitivity and electronic structure for the molecules studied. It can also be used to clarify the relationship between the results of previous efforts with these molecules and similar work with other explosives.
