AbstractA change in color and density during prolonged heating of a formulation containing ε‐hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) and Estane 5702 was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. Starting materials, virgin and final colored formulation were studied. Analysis revealed polymorphic impurity at all stages of production and processing, the nature and concentration of which changed with treatment of the material. Thermally‐induced polymorphic conversion was determined to be the cause of the decrease in density, whereas the color change was speculated to be the result of binder degradation. AbstractMolecular Mechanics (MM) calculations and X‐ray structures are compared for 1,4‐dinitro tetraazabicyclo(3,3.0)octanedione [1,4‐dinitro glycoluryl = 1,4‐DINGU]; 1,3‐dinitro‐4,6‐diacetyl tetraazabicyclo(3.3.0)octanedione [1,3‐dinitro‐4,6‐diacetyl glycoluryl = 1,3‐DINDAGU]; and 2,5,7,9‐tetranitro tetraazabicyclo(3.4.0)non‐anone (K 56). The agreement between geometries obtained by MM and X‐ray is good. The structure and the conformational states of the three model molecules are discussed. 1.4‐DINGU and K 56 are more symmetrical by MM than by X‐ray; this is due (at least in part) to packing in the crystal lattice. AbstractA method is suggested for the estimation of the physicochemical parameters associated with the entire phenomenon of detonation of explosive mixtures, exclusively containing the atomic species C,H,N,O, and expected to yield gaseous products. The equation of state applied for the products is a modified Abel equation. The calculation algorithm developed, constitutes the frame of construction of a computer program. AbstractPropellant deterioration can be kinetically analysed by both Berthelot's law and Arrhenius' law. Kinetic analysis of the mixed stabilizerpara‐nitro‐N‐Methylaniline(pNMA)/2‐nitrodiphenylamine (2NDPA) based propellant deterioration at different temperatures, during the time necessary for the complete consumption of the more reactive stabilizerpNMA, which can be taken as a measure of the safe life of these propellant compositions, gave results for both Berthelot's law and the Arrhenius' law which are satisfactory. However, it was found that the predicted safe life for the propellant compositions according to the Arrhenius law was much longer than that obtained from Berthelot's law. AbstractIn trying to understand the extraordinarily high dynamic ductility of a copper shaped charge jet, prior work by the authors has utilized the Eulerian MESA 2D code with a novel form of the LaGrangean tracer particle technique as well as the experimental “soft recovery” and metallurgical examination of partially collapsed copper liners.This work had indicated that localized material processing occurs during the earliest stages of liner collapse and causes dramatic visible grain size refinement, evident in the photomicrographs. Further computational analysis shows that the localized plastic flow is accompanied by very high localized engineering strains (>200), extremely high (>4 × 107s−1) localized strain rates, as well as elevated temperatures, all of which favor a dynamic recrystallization process.In this paper, the focus is on a detailed quantitative analysis of strain, strain rate and temperature distribution history within the collapsing liner, in the region of the inner liner apex and the early location of the moving collision zone, where the early material conditioning first occurs. Correlations are sought between the computed, time‐dependent values of these three paremeters and the microstructures observed in the interiors of the partially collapsed liners, in those regions where the grain size changes are observed. AbstractThe electron structures of various unstable N‐methylolamines and their imine cations formed during the urotropine nitrolysis process were studied by SCF‐CNDO/2 computation. The relative tendency of forming imine cations from such N‐methylolamine molecules was assessed by the computation values of Mulliken bond order (Mco) of CO bond and the negative values (−Eco) of two‐atome energy. The electrophilic order of imine cations described by the products (Zco) of carbocation's static charges and the rations of partition functions Qs/Qpbetween s and p electrons, were used to express the relative reactivity of the Mannich reaction intermediates.
