AbstractThe fracture behaviour of gun propellant grains during impact has been measured on a modified Hopkinson Bar which uses a projectile as the input bar. Evidence for the detection of initial minor crack formation in seven‐perforated cylindrical specimens of single base, double base and triple base propellant is presented. Under compressive load (pressurization rates of 100 GPa/s‐200 GPa/s), minor crack formation does not immediately result in large scale crack propagation or fragmentation of the specimens. The single base and triple base propellant are equally more resistant to crack initiation than the double base propellant when tested in either the end‐on or side‐on modes. Implications for munition survivability are discussed in terms of mechanical frictional effects caused during compressive loading of cracked propellant or compressive heating in propellant cracks during the ballisti

摘要:
AbstractThe oscillating combustion, which takes place in the closed vessel when certain colloidal gun propellants are fired has been investigated. The amplitude of the oscillation depended on the geometry and flame temperature of the propellant. For propellants having the same composition but different geometry, the amplitude of the oscillation varied inversely with the maximum pressure in the vessel. This was tentatively ascribed to vortex formation during combustion.

AbstractFor safety purpose during the storage of single base propellant it is important to study all factors which will act on its components through this period. This study is more demanded on changing the source of raw material. Thermal decomposition and applying of Berthelot's law helped in determination of storage period of a single base propellant after its preparation from Sudan cotton linters as a new raw material.

AbstractThixotropic gels of unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine (UDMH) have been prepared using methyl cellulose (4.48 wt%) and agar‐agar (0.64 wt%) chemical gelling agents. Red fuming nitric acid has been gelled by using sodium silicate (4.25 wt%).The effect of various parameters like size of container, particle size of gellants and temperature on gellation time of UDMH gelled system has been investigated. The gellation time of UDMH gel is found to increase with the increase in the internal diameter of the container. Gellation time is found to show direct proportionality with the particle size when methyl cellulose is used as gellant. In case of methyl cellulose, the gellation occurs quickly at higher temperature whereas the reverse trend is observed when agar‐agar gellant is used.In order to boost the performance of liquid propellants, the metallized gels of UDMH containing Al (10‐40 wt%) and Mg (10‐25 wt%) metal powders have been prepared. The density measurements of virgin and metallized gels reveal that there is a maximum gain of 46.72% and 19.3% over virgin gels on incorporation of Al and Mg powders respectively.Efforts have been made to understand the process of gellation using optical and photomicrographic tec
