AbstractAn evaluation on coating HMX crystals with three different polymeric binders using the “solvent slurry process” was conducted. Three polymers employed were:–a thermoplastic copolymer [Kel‐F 3700],–a thermoplastic elastomer [kraton‐G 1650] and–a polyurethane [Impranil DLH].Kel‐F 3700 presented an electrostatic hazard and was too insoluble for application by the slurry process. AbstractThermal analysis and FT‐IR spectrometry were used to characterize the urethane reaction mechanism of polyglycidyl azide (GAP) propellants with powdered amorphous boron. The amorphous boron added GAP propellant with trimethylol propane (TMP) vigorously gassed of during the cure process and did not complete its urethane reaction. Although it was curable by excess amount of isocyanates, voids or bubbles were trapped inside the propellant grain. Since the powdered amorphous boron was relatively hygroscopic compared to other crystalline metal powders, it might contain boron surface impurities, namely, water, boric acid, and/or boron oxide which disturbed the urethane reaction. AbstractCastable aluminized plastic‐bonded explosive (PBX) is a multiple components blending. To find an optimum mixture blending (formulation) for PBX to meet several required specifications is formidable. This is due to the fact that there are unlimited candidate formulations from which an appropriate one could be chosen. AbstractProbit analysis is an efficient method for analyzing sensitiveness test data. If the aim is to determine themedian stimulus value, the choice of stimulus scale is of minor importance. If, on the other hand, extreme frequencies are to be predicted, great care should be taken in the selection of an appropriate stimulus scale. A scale incorporating an upper and a lower stimulus level corresponding to explosion probability 1 and 0, respectively, is suggested. In an illustrative example this scale is shown to involve considerably less bias than either a simple linear or logarithmic scale.

AbstractThe critical temperature of thermal explosion for 3‐nitro‐1,2,4‐triazol‐5‐one (NTO) and its ethylenediammonium salt (ENTO), potassium salt (KNTO), copper salt (CuNTO) and lead salt (PbNTO) were obtained using the stationary theory of thermal explosion, the calculation formula of estimating the critical temperature of thermal explosion under non‐isothermal DSC condition, and the determination method for the critical temperature of thermal explosion of small‐scale solid explosive and its data treatment method. The results of the four methods are agreeable to each other, whose differences are within 5%. The results indicate that the heat‐resistance ability of NTO and its salts and of the common explosives, cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX), cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX), pentaerythritoltetranitrate (PETN) and tetryl decreases in the order HMX>NTO>ENTO>KNTO>RDX>PETN>tet

AbstractDucted rockets operate with the combustion of fuel‐rich gas generated in a primary combustor and the ram‐air induced from the atmosphere to a secondary combustor. Thus, the combustion performance depends on the mixing and reaction processes of the fuel‐rich gas and the air flow in the secondary combustor. The energetic solid fuels examined in this study consisted of ammonium perchlorate based composite propellants containing boron particles. The combustion efficiency of boron particles in the secondary combustor was determined as a function of air‐mixing process and air/fuel ratio. Two types of air‐inlet were used to evaluate the combustion of boron particles. AbstractTyhe influences of acidity and dipentaerythritol hexanitrate (DiPEHN) on the thermal sensitivity of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Decomposition kinetics of PETN with or without DiPEHN, acidic PETN and DiPEHN were also studied by SC to evaluate Arrhenius parameters. The presence of sulphuric acid impurity decreased the thermal stability as well as the activation energy, whereas the nitric acid influence was negligible. Thermal stability of PETN was not affected by the presence of DiPEHN. DiPEHN showed better thermal stability and higher decomposition energy compared to PETN.
