The historical analysis of the development of no‐till agriculture focuses on the relevant social, economic, and scientific forces during the decades of development of no‐till into an agricultural practice. Information was collected from historical documents as well as taped telephone interviews with scientists involved in the early development of no‐till agriculture.

Data were collected from land operators in erosion‐prone areas of six counties in Ohio to examine the factors that affect adoption of soil erosion control practices. A theoretical perspective was developed from selected components of diffusion and farm structure models. The study findings revealed that the theoretical perspective created for the study was inadequate to predict adoption behaviors examined. Respondents indicated that conventional tillage practices were most frequently used while soil conservation practices were seldom used. It was concluded that existing voluntary soil conservation programs will probably be ineffective until the costs of pollution become significantly higher.

Irrigation development investments are designed to increase food supply and rural income and to improve the quality of life for the rural poor. Yet many irrigation projects have had poor agronomic and economic results as well as unintended and undesirable social effects. Due to inappropriate project design and a failure to fully consider sociological factors, projects are often characterized by water use inefficiency, poor maintenance, and deviance. This article identifies social factors that have facilitated project success. Cases are used to exemplify key lessons that have emerged from field experience. Emphasis is given to unintended project outcomes, farmer participation, site‐specific design, and the match of irrigation organizational design to the type of technology.

Researchers in the sociology of agriculture have increasingly used variables representing the physical environment to assist them in understanding the adoption of agricultural technology by farm operators, the variations that exist in farm structure, and the consequences of changes in the availability of critical natural resources. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of research on the consequences of resource depletion in agriculture. To partially fill this void, this article uses a human ecological perspective to empirically examine the farm structure consequences of ground‐water depletion in the Great Plains. It was found that in recent years, declines in the number of acres irrigated have occurred in areas where water resources are limited and have been depleted. In addition, irrigation declines had led to farm structure adaptations such as lower gross farm sales, fewer farms, reduced energy expenditures, and fewer hired farm workers. Additional research on the relationship between resources and agriculture is encouraged.

Analysis is made of the success of a 50‐year experiment in the United States to control soil erosion. Findings are reported from a 13‐state study of farmers’ adoptions of conservation plans prepared by the Soil Conservation Service (SCS). The study sites have some of the highest rates of soil erosion found in the United States, yet only about a third of the farm operators have conservation plans. Furthermore, many of these plans are outdated and the actions required to reduce soil erosion often are not implemented. The Farm Security Act of 1985 represents a new strategy for addressing long‐standing soil erosion problems.

A qualitative study is presented describing the connections between social change and environmental controversy in the case of a proposal to site a wood‐fired electric power plant in a nonmetropolitan community. The population migration turnaround in regions with scenic and recreational amenities functions as a vector for the changes described, including the ideologies of energy development and local control and the politics of experts and expertise. The threads of social change are woven into an transdisciplinary account of the controversy that should be instructive for scholars and practitioners alike. The essential feature of wood‐fired electric power plants is that they constitute large‐scale renewable energy development. The importance of scale in resource development and in the siting of facilities is emphasized. The alternative to such ideology‐based conflict may lie in increasing the opportunity for citizens to express their environmental values in the decisionmaking process.
