摘要:
The U.S. marine fisheries management system provides a case study for exploring issues related to improving the fisheries policy process. The potential role and value of multiobjective analysis for developing policy information are examined. A numerical biosocioeconomic policy model is used to illustrate the value of interdisciplinary analysis and the problems associated with various fisheries management concepts, including the concept of optimum yield. The paper discusses practical problems inherent in developing comprehensive analysis but also suggests ways in which these approaches could prove valuable in guiding the policy process toward adoption of rational management strategies.

摘要:
Social science studies of fishing communities have tended to be highly focused on male activities and to regard women's work as domestic or as merely supplemental to that of men. This review article is intended to update the material presented in an earlier, more comprehensive essay on gender in the maritime literature. It examines some contemporary exceptions to this androcentric tendency, suggesting that understanding of local fisheries can be greatly enhanced by reexamining the role of gender in fishing communities and in fisheries production.

摘要:
The women of Minakuppam, a small hamlet of ocean‐going fishermen located just outside the city of Madras in Tamilnadu, India, are more active and less limited in their daily social activities and have more power than women in most Indian farming villages. This contrast is extended with evidence on women's status in fishing and agricultural communities in other predominantly agrarian societies. Several crucial features of political economy account for women's status in these communities. Participation of women in economic production and low status for fishing occupations in societal stratification are the major factors accounting for women's distinctive activities and relationships. These features of the political economy affect women's control and use of resources and their opportunities for social support from kin and other women.

摘要:
This paper presents a history of the evolution of the property rights structure to the Chesapeake Bay oyster grounds, which includes both common and private property, and explains the reasons for the creation and persistence of this mixed system during the past 100 years. Implications for future management follow from this history.

摘要:
New Zealand's implementation of an individual transferable quota (TTQ) management system in 1986 for most of its fisheries is being observed closely worldwide. We describe New Zealand's TTQ system and analyze the first 5 years of the New Zealand experience. We use Copes's (1986) paper as a catalyst to compare his assessment of potential problems of individual quotas with the actual operation of individual quotas in New Zealand. The brief New Zealand TTQ experience demonstrates that the economic rationale behind individual transferable quotas is sound. We discuss the problems and positive effects of New Zealand's experience. Individual transferable quotas should not be viewed as a panacea, but simply as another fisheries management option.
