摘要:
Traditionally the primary sources of information used by farmers in the decision to adopt new practices were, in descending order of importance, (1) other farmers, (2) local agricultural product dealers, and (3) local government agencies. Mass media sources were relatively unimportant. Six hundred southwestern Iowa farmers were interviewed to determine their sources of conservation information. The top three sources named were (1) farm magazines, (2) other farmers, and (3) the Soil Conservation Service. The two sources of information most consistently related to awareness of erosion problems and use of conservation practices were the Soil Conservation Service and magazines. The importance of magazines provides useful implications for soil conservation programs.

摘要:
This paper reports the wildlife preferences, activities, and attitudes of 63 early adopters who own forestland in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. Seventy‐eight percent of the respondents or their family members hunted, and 84 percent or more participated in other wildlife activities. A positive relationship was found between the number of wildlife enhancement management practices used and the professed importance of hunting. Results suggest that wildlife enhances lifestyle by preserving a way of life and providing a better environment for future generations, a better quality of life, and opportunities for observation and appreciation of animals and plants.

摘要:
Large‐scale conservation projects are frequently portrayed as alternatives to development rather than as yet another type of development with important social consequences. The present research investigates an initial list of social consequences of protected areas development strategies in Third World countries. Of primary concern is how comanagement of protected areas with resident populations can reduce the social consequences of involuntary relocation, residency without access to resources, and assimilation; each is illustrated with multiple Third World examples. The beneficial social consequences of comanaged ecodevelopment are briefly set forth in three biosphere reserve case studies.

摘要:
This case study systematically analyzed the adoption, over a seven‐year period, of governmentally mandated integrated pest management (IPM) practices by brussels sprouts growers in California. Promotion of required IPM practices were complemented by research, technical assistance, and education carried out by Cooperative Extension and other resources. Information, infrastructure, and perceived risk factors that affected growers and their nonadoption of the IPM presence‐absence sampling procedures were investigated. Growers who were required to use the practices were compared with other growers in a three‐county area not required to use the research‐proven IPM methods. The shortcomings of a mandated strategy and associated factors are discussed, emphasizing the need to consider organizational and human elements when requiring new agricultural production practices and behaviors.

摘要:
The short‐run economic impacts of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in North Dakota are estimated by using an input‐output model together with results from a statewide survey of CRP participants. Net direct reductions in production expenditures and household income resulting from the program totaled $55 million, with about 62 percent of the effect occurring in the retail sector. The total impact of the program is about $141 million, or only about 0.5 percent of the state's baseline economic activity. Local areas with high concentration of CRP land and businesses that depend heavily on farm input sales may be affected disproportionately.

摘要:
Water shortages have become increasingly serious natural resource problems in recent years. In most cases local water systems are responsible for programs to reduce individual water use. The effectiveness of these organizations is related to their ability to obtain information and assistance from other organizations at the local, state, and federal levels. This paper examines the experiences of 28 local water systems in North Carolina in responding to water shortage. Results are based on detailed personal interviews with the main decision maker for each water system. Obstacles to effective water management are evaluated. Sources of information and assistance are identified. Attitudes of respondents about their experiences are analyzed. Smaller systems were found to face more problems in coping with water shortage. They are also in greater need of assistance and information from outside organizations.
