We report a model of acute ischemic liver failure which does not require temporary or permanent portal decompression. The model is induced by segmental ischemia of the median and left lateral lobes for 100 min by a vascular clamp applied on the afferent vessels. Declamping is followed by resection of the nonischemic right lateral and caudate lobes. No portal stasis occurs as blood flow to the right lateral and caudate lobes is maintained during the period of clamping. The 24-hour mortality is 76.5%. Evidence of severe liver damage is shown by histological and biochemical studies.

The results of 13 clinical trials were analysed in order to define the efficacy of ceftriaxone (Rocephin®) when given alone and in a single daily dose in the treatment of postoperative infections. In a total of 306 evaluable patients, many of whom were suffering from severe infections, the global clinical success rate was about 90 %. The drug was very well tolerated. Minor transient effects occurred only in a few patients. In 8 out of the 13 trials, ceftriaxone was compared with other standard antibiotics. In these comparative studies, the global clinical success rate with ceftriaxone (93.8%) was higher than with other drugs (81 %). The microbiological response to ceftriaxone was extremely satisfactory for almost all pathogens

Hyperthermia alone inhibits growth of the human esophageal cancer cell line (KSE-1). Even temporary exposure to hyperthermia results in substantial decreases in growth in a time- and temperature-dependent manner. A precipitous decrease in growth occurred at a temperature of approximately 42.5 °C. Concomitant application of hyperthermia, bleomycin and irradiation (hyperthermochemoradiotherapy, HCR) had a maximal effect on cell growth, compared to findings in cells treated with only one or two of these modalities. Fractionated hyperthermia (42 °C, 60 min) at a time interval of under 12 h was less effective than a single application (42 °C, 120 min). However, over a 12-hour time interval, the effects of both treatments were similar. Fractionated HCR (hyperthermia: 42 ° C, 60 min; chemotherapy: 2 µg/ml of bleomycin, 60 min; radiotherapy: 2 Gy) at a time interval of under 21 h was less effective than a single HCR (hyperthermia: 42 ° C, 120 min; chemotherapy: 2 µg/ml of bleomycin, 120 min; radiotherapy: 4 Gy). 126 patients with surgical infections of different severity were treated intravenously with ceftriaxone (Rocephin®) 2 or 1 g once a day in less serious cases. We did not observe any severe drug reaction; the duration of therapy varied between 1 and 7 days. Ceftriaxone is a very powerful broad-spectrum antibacterial drug. Treatment with a single injection or infusion per day saves costs and avoids hospitalisation: ceftriaxone is thus the ideal antibacterial drug for the ambulatory patient

Splenic salvage techniques were developed since the immunologic importance of the spleen has been recognized. Various synthetic products, such as Avitan, Collastat Gel foam, Superstat, Thrombostat, were used and lately even pig skin was tested for its hemostatic ability. In this study, a canine splenic bleeding model was used to test autologous split-thickness skin-graft hemostatic effect, compared to pig skin, human skin and canine fascia. Lyophilized pig skin was tested on 12 splenic wounds, lyophilized human skin on 10, canine skin on 10, canine fascia on 10 and simple pad gauze on 10 other splenic wounds. Each animal served as its own control. Pig skin was more effective than canine skin (p < 0.01), but the canine skin was more effective than human skin (p < 0.01) and canine fascia (p < 0.05). Long-term implantation of the canine skin graft caused fibrosis and epidermoid cyst formation, but they were of no clinical significance in the dog. In conclusion, autologous split thickness graft, always at hand, was found to be an effective hemostatic procedure and proved to be safe in the dog.
