Fresh collagenous fibers from rabbit aponeurosis were prepared taking care to maintain their natural properties, and inserted into fascial tissue of the same animal. The tissue reactions were compared histologically to those produced by cotton, catgut and silk fibers similarly inserted in the same tissues. Around these fibers marked foreign body reactions were present. The reactions around the autograft fibers were minimal compared to those around cotton, catgut and silk. The possibility of using autograft fibers as sutures in certain surgical conditions and for operations in specific organs is suggested.

An improved method of canine auxiliary liver allotransplantation and effectiveness of antihistaminic drugs in preventing outflow block are described. The hepatic homograft is transplanted on the left side of the abdomen after splenectomy, which provides more room for the graft and vessels of sufficient size for vascular anastomosis of physiologic type. The results obtained in the second group of animals show that administration of antihistaminic drugs with the perfusate is effective in preventing outflow block syndrome.

The results of sutureless vascular anastomoses in experimental kidney homotransplantations by means of an angiorrhaphy instrument performed on 21 animals are reported. At the same time, a new type of percutaneous kidney phlebography with an optimum information on the reflux of the blood from the graft was used. The results are substantiated by reno-angiography, percutaneous renal phlebographies, autopsies and histological findings.

13 mongrel dogs, weighing from 12 to 25 kg were subjected to substitutive allotransplantation of the duodenopancreas and survived for over 48 h. Immunodepressive therapy consisted of azathioprine and phytohemagglutinin. Tissue compatibility has been evaluated by 3 different methods. Average survival time (34.7 days) and survival time in each histocompatibility group were longer than in the comparative series of 21 dogs receiving azathioprine, corticoids and antilymphocyte globulin (28.1 days). Lower incidence of infection and specific immunodepressive action of the PHA explains better results obtained by the association of azathioprine and PHA after pancreatic allotransplantation in the dogs.

Comparative studies were done in inbred rats with antisera against lymphocytes, thymocytes and subcellular fractions using two immunization methods.The cellhomogenate was separated into 4 fractions. Antisera against mitochondrial-granular fractions and total cells yielded strongest immunosuppression and highest lymphocytotoxic titers. Toxicity was higher when antisera were produced with total cells than with subcellular fractions and when adjuvant was used.

Direct communications between the left ventricular lumen and the myocardial sinusoids were produced by multiple myocardial punctures on 18 dogs of 3 different groups with ligation of coronary arteries. Blood flow was estimated in normal and punctured myocardium by measuring uptake of 86Rb. Results obtained in acute studies indicate: (1) no increase in blood flow to the infarcted myocardium using a cannula of 1.2 and 1.4 mm size; (2) a significant increase of 86Rb uptake and, therefore, of blood supply from the ventricular cavity when multiple 4-mm channels were made from the inside of the left ventricle.

Thirty dogs were subjected to infusions of protamine chloride 30 mg/min. Preceded by a pronounced drop in platelet count, there was 2.5–7 min after the start of the infusion a fall in aortic blood pressure, an increase in pulmonary arterial pressure, a decrease in lung compliance and in arterial oxygen tension. In heparinized animals (1000 U/kg) repeated infusions had the same effect as the initial infusion. Non-heparinized animals did not react significantly to the repeated infusions. The dose of protamine that elicited a reaction was not different in heparinized and in non-heparinized animals and it was lower than that calculated for neutralization of the heparin given. In 3 dogs defibrinogenated by Reptilase injections, the response to protamine was as strong as in dogs with normal fibrinogen levels. Fibrin formation is, therefore, excluded as a cause of the observed effects. Four dogs made refractory to protamine by repeated infusions, reacted to thrombin in the same manner as dogs not subjected to repeated infusions. Thus, protamine and thrombin act via different pathways, although the platelet as a common target cell is not thereby excluded. It is suggested that protamine exerts its haemodynamic and respiratory side effects via a release of smooth muscle stimulating substances from aggregated platelet

Experiments of VF were made on 77 mongrel dogs under hypothermy. In 24 donors VF was produced through mechanical trauma. Then, an aqueous extract was prepared from the fibrillating ventricles and this was injected into the coronary arteries of the recipients. Based on the above data, the author concludes that: (1) the aqueous extract contains the factor(s) which is (are) capable of producing VF; (2) the principal cause of VF is not the potassium or calcium content found within the extract; (3) the factor(s) which is (are) responsible for the production of VF is (are) not proteic.
