Normovolemic hemodilution with dextran-70 was carried out in 4 Göttingen mini-pigs with induced atherosclerosis. Hematocrit was lowered stepwise to 10–15%. Measurements of the skeletal muscle surface oxygen pressure fields were carried out using the MDO oxygen electrode. Results indicated an optimal pO2 histogram at hematocrit between 21 and 25%, with uniformly abnormal histograms at hematocrit 10%. Cardiac output determinations in 1 animal revealed an initial increase in stroke volume (Hct 29%) followed by increasing heart rate at lower hematocrits. In this investigation, oral Kanamycin was administered to young male rabbits for 3 days, the control group receiving only water. Partial hepatectomy was then performed in all of them, and mitochondrial activity, energy charge and portal vein ammonia were measured at 12 and 24 h postoperatively. It was found that mitochondria from oral Kana-mycin-treated rabbits have higher respiratory control ratios, higher state 3 respiration and higher P/O ratios than the control group, suggesting a further enhancement of phosphorylative activity. Energy charge in the Kanamycin-treated group showed less acute changes suggesting a positive balance in the energy status of those livers. The ammonia level here was much lower than in the control group. These findings suggest that the removal or the decrease of the overloading effect of ammonia resulting from bacterial activities in the intestine, has a beneficial effect on the healing process in liver surgery.

15 young dogs between the ages of 2 and 4 months and weighing less than 6 kg underwent circulatory arrest for 1 h combined with profound hypothermia and extra-corporeal circulation. During reperfusion, myocardial metabolism was studied by comparing the oxygen arteriovenous content difference and lactate balance at different temperatures. As the myocardial temperatures rose, the oxygen arterial venous difference increased from 4 vol/100 ml at 25 °C to 10 vol/100 ml; lactate balance changed from –19.3 to +8% which because of a large rise in arterial lactate indicates a considerable increase in lactate consumption. This study shows that profound and generalized hypothermia ensures good myocardial protection during at least 1 h of ischemia and confirms results obtained with other forms of cardiac hypotherm

Secretin was determined radioimmunologically in portal vein blood and in duodenal mucosa biopsies in stressed male Wistar rats as compared to control animals. The stressed animals showed a significantly higher secretin content of the duodenal mucosa and no different levels of the portal vein blood. A stress ulcer-reducing cimetidine application does not demonstrate any influence of secretin content on duodenal mucosa. The obvious elevation of duodenal secretin is not the result of an increased gastric acid production, but may be a consequence of a stress-reduced susceptibility of the pancreas to endogenous secretin.

In the present investigation gastric morphology, blood flow, vascular permeability and water content were studied in cat stomachs with acetic acid-induced gastritis at different time intervals up to 3 days after induction of gastritis. The morphological changes including mucosal erosions, edema and hemorrhage showed normalization within 3 days. The mucosa and muscularis blood flow remained essentially unchanged compared with pre-gastritis values and with the control group. Gastritis was associated with leakage of circulating albumin into the stomach wall most pronounced 4 h after the induction of gastritis. The water content was high at 4 and 24 h after induction of gastritis with almost normalization at 3 days. The morphological characteristics of our model are very similar to those observed in man. Leakage of circulating albumin into the gastric wall seems to be the best parameter for quantification of the inflammatory changes found in acute gastritis, while blood flow seems to be a less important parameter.

Hypoxemia was induced in pigs by artificial ventilation with 7% oxygen. Death occurred after 21–99 min (mean 48 min). The plasma hypoxanthine and base deficit concentrations increased linearly during hypoxemia and were significantly elevated after 5 min compared to initial values. The correlation between hypoxanthine and base deficit was good (p < 0.001, r = 0.68). The rate of increase of plasma hypoxanthine concentration was correlated with survival time and a significant correlation was found between the negative slope of hypoxanthine increase and survival. Death occurred in all animals when the hypoxanthine concentrations exceeded about 125 µmol/l. The nature and characteristics of the tissue which develops on the inner surfaces of vascular arterial prostheses have been investigated by means of histological and biochemical criteria. Velour prosthetic tubes were implanted as aortic segmental replacements in the dog. On the 60th postoperative day, a neointimal layer of collagen covered with flattened endothelial-like cells was noted. However, despite this morphological evidence the microsomic and cytosolic enzmyes implicated in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycuronoglycans were significantly modified in comparison with the normal aortic wall. The marked decrease in enzymes corresponding to the initiation of the glucidic linkages suggests that the biosynthesis of the macromolecular components responsible for the normal blood vessel interface was impaired in these newly developed tissues. Therefore, it is suggested that this newly developed tissue cannot be considered as a true vascular endothelium.

In an in vitro flowmodel a constant temperature hot-film anemometer was tested, using conical needle and catheter-mounted probes. Calibration, linearization and zero-point determination as well as sensitivity change with hematocrit, angulation, flow direction and dirt deposits on the film are described. Curves were compared with those obtained simultaneously from an electromagnetic flowmeter. The hot-film anemometer was direction-insensitive and signals were seen 0.01—0.03 sec before the flowmeter signals. The frequency response of the anemometer was sufficiently high to register turbulent flow. In 27 simultaneous measurements the mean anemometer results were 6 ± 8% ( ± SD) higher than the flowmeter results and the peak results correspondingly 16 ± 6%.
