Human portal circulation was investigated by a dye-dilution technique. The dye was injected in the superior mesenteric artery and venous blood was sampled from various parts of the portal system. Blood flow was calculated according to a modified Stewart-Hamilton formula from the dye-dilution curves obtained. The mean transit time, the appearance time, the vascular volume and the vascular resistance were obtained.

The pressor response to sympathomimetic agents was studied in dogs with chronic aortic coarctation. In 6-month-old dogs, after coarctation, norepinephrine (NE) produced vasoconstriction in the forelimbs but not in the hindlimbs. In 12-month-old dogs after aortic coarctation, (a) NE and epinephrine caused increase in blood pressure in the forelimbs and decrease in the hindlimbs; latter effect was abolished by β-adrenergic blockade, (b) Tyramine produced a pressor effect in the forelimbs and no change in hindlimb. (c) Isoproterenol caused a fall in blood pressure in both forelimbs and hindlimbs. (d) Angiotensin II increased blood pressure in both forelimbs and hindlimbs; but the response in hindlimbs was lower than in forelimbs

Multiple in situ freezing of the rabbit testis has been shown to be an effective antigenic stimulus as evidenced from the production of tissue-specific antibodies against a testicular antigen. These antibodies reacted with isologous as well as autologous testicular extracts. Histologic studies of testicular biopsies of the contralateral testis of frozen animals revealed alterations similar to those described by others following the induction of experimental autoimmune aspermatogenic orchitis by parenteral administration of testicular extracts in other species. The possibility of the induction of controlled freezing injury of an organ may provide a useful experimental model for further studies of autoimmunity in man and in experimental animals.

In HALG-treated dogs with cardiac allografts a suppression of anti-HALG antibodies was obtained by previously rendering the dogs tolerant to HIgG. The cardiac allografts of HIgG-tolerant and HALG-treated dogs, which had no anti-HALG antibodies in the antigen-elimination test, survived significantly longer (mean survival time: 8.2 ± 1.0 days) than transplants of HIgG-sensitized dogs which had been sensitized 6 weeks prior to transplantation (mean survival time: 5.2 ± 1.0 days). Guinea-pigs, scorbutic on the day of transplantation, showed prolonged survival of skin allografts (MST 16.8 vs. 6.8 in controls). It is proposed that vitamin C plays an important role in transplantation immunity.

Measurements of urinary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in 25 patients with clinically significant unilateral nephroptosis demonstrated a posture-dependent change. While these patients were supine – overnight – the urinary LDH activity was normal. On assuming an erect posture, the LDH activity rose to abnormal level. Such ‘swinging’ changes in urinary LDH activity could not be detected in normal people and in patients having undergone nephropexy one year following the intervention. Eleven ureteral replacements by Rhodergon-Scurasil® protheses were performed in 7 dogs. The production of the prothesis and the technique of the operation are described. Slight dilation of the upper urinary tract, noted 10 days after operation by X-ray television and IVP, diminished continuously thereafter in all dogs. Bilateral substitution of the ureter was done in 4 dogs. Following the replacement of the second ureter by a prothesis, the side first operated upon again showed a moderate dilation, while the second side remained highly satisfactory. Evacuation of the urine via the rigid prothesis was assured by peristaltic waves initiated in the remaining 2 cm of the upper ureter. In order to avoid vesicoureteral reflux in future experiments, a model of a sleeve-valve mechanism is presented

Contractile function, high-energy phosphate stores and tissular water, Na and K contents were investigated in order to study the specific effect of hypothermia in heart preservation. Isolated dog hearts were perfused with fresh oxygenated blood from a support animal. Experimental conditions were: (a) 30-min normothermia; (b) 3-hour normothermia; (c) 2-hour hypothermia (13°C) between normothermic periods. Ventricular function curves were drawn in isovolumic conditions during the normothermic periods. Enzymatic determinations of tissular PC, ATP, ADP, and AMP were performed on serial samples (20–60 mg) obtained by a drill biopsy technique.
