A technique of non-auxiliary orthotopic total small bowel transplantation in the rat is described. Two groups of recipients were compared: a group receiving a homologous graft without immunosuppression (group I) vs. a group receiving an isologous graft (group II). The evaluation was done by the following parameters: survival, weight and microscopical anatomy. The operative mortality (32.5°/°) was comparable with the mortality of transplantation techniques of other vascularised organs in the rat. 11 out of 14 rats from group II, surviving the transplantation procedure, are still alive and in excellent condition, more than a half year later. The mean survival time (32 days) of group I was significantly longer than the mean survival time of other homologous transplanted organs in the same donor host combination. The weight curve of group I showed a striking difference in the post-operative course with the group that received isologous grafts. A heterotopic liver experiment was set up in which a force field was applied to the transplanted liver. By whatever technique the field was applied it modified the rejection of the liver in a fashion predicted by measurement and an outline of the equipotential lines of force generated by the applied electric field. The findings indicate that rejection is modified by applied force fields. Rejection is undoubtedly, therefore, a surface recognition phenomenon. Cell surfaces bear both recognition and rejection propensities. These can be modified by an externally applied electrochemical charge. Surface recognition phenomenon and surfaces of organs perfused by blood from either a homo or hetero species or an animal of a different species appear to obey electrochemical laws in terms of recognition and electron exchange. A series of attempts to modify rejection in vivo would now seem to be appropriate in experimental animals.

The canine pancreas-duodenum has been perfused for 3 h with a membrane oxygenator, a pulsatile pump and a heat exchanger at a temperature of 37 °C. Among the criteria used in this study, the insulin output into the venous blood in response to glucose administration, as well as pancreas secretion after secretin stimulation were those found to be the most reliable indicators as to the viability of the pancreas. This is further supported by an average oxygen consumption of 0.77 ml O2/100 g at a constant flow of 80 ml/min and a perfusion pressure of 75 mm Hg. The pressure/flow relationship as for any other perfused organ was a safe indicator as to the viability of the perfused pancreas. The functional viability correlated with our anatomical findings

In a dose-dependent manner, a first rapid i.v. injection of ALG inhibited an induced diuresis and depressed arterial ALG blood pressure. A similar dose of normal heterologous gloublin had no effect. A second rapid injection of ALG given 3 h after a first injection did not inhibit diuresis or cause such marked hypotension. However, a second injection of ALG given 1 or 2 days after the first inhibited diuresis. Inhibition of diuresis by a first injection of ALG was not prevented by antihistamine or heparin therapy. However, if the ALG was infused over 1 h the inhibitory effect on diuresis was not significant. When peripheral blood lymphocytes were given with the second injection of ALG (the second ALG injection given 3 h after the first) diuresis was inhibited. This effect was not so evident when thoracic duct lymphocytes were given in even larger numbers.

Porcine kidneys were temporarily grafted for 1–3 days into a homologous host and then definitively re· transplanted into a new homologous recipient. The results showed a prolonged survival of the retransplanted kidneys (4 animals lived, respectively 64, 79, 96, 148 days); this is quite significant in comparison to the controls, whose survival was between 5 and 21 days. A marked variation of the mononuclear cell infiltration, histologically present before and after retransplantation, was observed. Pulmonary denervation produces an alteration in the spirographic pattern, together with some characteristic clinical manifestations. These findings are accompanied by severe pulmonary edema, congestion and hemorrhage, which often lead to the death of the animal by respiratory insufficiency. In the survivors, these phenomena regress somewhat with time.
