SummaryHippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibiusL.) were censused by both ground and aerial surveys along a 165 km stretch of the Luangwa River, Zambia. Total numbers of 6293 and 6544 were estimated for 1982 ground and 1983 aerial counts, respectively. The 1982 density was 38 hippopotami per river km for the whole study area, with a total of 343 hippopotamus schools. The ratio of calves to adults in the ground counts was 0.048: 1. The population growth for the whole study area since 1970 shows an annual increase of 7%. Hippopotamus densities in Luangwa are now twice those recorded in Uganda when a management cull was initiated there in the 1950s.RÉSUMEÉLes hippopotames (Hippopotamus amphibius L.) furent dénombrés par recensements terrestres et aériens le long d'une portion de 165 km de la Luangwa River en Zambie.

SummaryIt has recently been suggested that the distribution of elephant and the impact by elephant on woodland can be manipulated by burning. Six landscape categories have been described for the W. National Park and Tamou Reserve in south‐west Niger, each containing a single segment of the catenary sequence. Data on woodland utilization and damage by elephant were collected on a series of quadrats and by direct observation of elephant behaviour. A mosaic of burned and unburned land, soil moisture levels and burned‐sprouted, burned‐unsprouted and unburned vegetation at different positions on the catena allowed elephant to utilize different aspects to meet different needs. Results indicated that the proportion of feeding on burned and unburned land followed the relative spatial distribution of burning on the upper catena levels. On mid and lower catena levels feeding was concentrated in areas where vegetation had resprouted following fire and on unburned land. Both bulls and cows showed a strong preference for unburned land when standing (resting). Differences in elephant distribution by activity, relative to the spatial distribution of burning, indicated that comparisons by aerial survey may be biased. Climatic factors were compared between different areas with regard to elephant utilization of burned and unburned land. It is recommended that the management implications of burning with respect to elephant‐woodland interactions must be considered in a broader model.RÉSUMEÉOn a suggéré récemment que la distribution de l'éléphant et son impact sur les zones boisées pouvaient ěre ‘manpulés’ par les feux.

SummaryInvertebrate animals were collected at seven localities in the Ruwenzori range at altitudes between 12,500 ft and 15,500 ft (3810–4724 m); and at three localities on Mt. Kenya between 13,500 ft and 15,700 ft (4115–4785 m). Their habitats are briefly described, with special attention to the mosses present in them. The collections from the Ruwenzori contained 1514 specimens representing nineteen orders or higher groups and at least forty‐three families. They included sixty named genera, one new to science, and sixty named species, of which twenty‐five were new to science and one a new sub‐species. The collections from Mt. Kenya contained 126 specimens representing at least eighteen families. They included seventeen named genera, one new to science, and eighteen named species, of which eight were new to science. These collections add evidence in favour of the view that some groups of invertebrate animals, like some groups of vascular plants, have undergone insular evolution in the Afro‐alpine zone, and the represented on the different mountains in East Africa by vicarious species.RÉSUMEÉOn a récolté des invertébrés dans sept localitiés du massif du Ruwenzori à des altitudes de 38 10 à 4724 m et dans trois localités sur le mont Kenya entre 4115 et 4785 m.

SummaryIn central Uganda, the black‐headed weaver is most abundant near human habitations. It feeds mainly in or near cultivations. Two hundred and forty hours were spent observing food items taken by this weaver in the wild near Kampala from March 1979 to May 1980. Crops and/or stomachs of 201 black‐headed weavers caught monthly from April 1980 to April 1981 were analysed. Field observations showed that insects made up 21.2% of total food items and plant material 78.8% but gut analysis showed that the mean percentage relative frequency of insects in the diet varied; in some months birds took more insects than plant material (numerically) and in other months the reverse occurred. Plant material was mostly seeds of the grassRotboellia exaltataL. f. and maize grains (41.7% and 15%, respectively, according to the field observations; 62.7% and 76.3%, respectively, from the gut content analysis). Other grass seeds were eaten in very small amounts. Weed seeds (forbs) and nectar were also occasionally taken. Animal material was mostly insects but included some spiders. Of all 201 crops and/or stomachs examined, beetles were present in 78.7%, followed closely by ants (60.4%).

SummaryThe reproductive phenology of migratory white‐eared kob in Boma National Park, southern Sudan, was investigated during 1981‐83. Calf production occurred during the late wet season (September‐December), well after the period of peak food abundance. Lactation continued throughout the dry season, when forage was in short supply. As a consequence, lactating females had lower fat reserves than either non‐lactating females or males. The observed calving phenology may (i) allow females time to replenish fat reserves prior to lactation and (ii) reduce the risk of predation on new‐born young.RÉSUMEÉLa phénologie reproductive du cobe de Buffon àoreilles blanches migrateur dans le Parc National de Boma, dans le sud du Soudan, fut étudiée durant les années 1981 à 1983.
