SummaryMeadows in the Dinder National Park were used mostly by reedbuck (Redunca redunca cottoniW. Rothchild), buffalo (Syncerus caffer aequinoctialisBlyth), waterbuck (Kobus defassa harnieriMurie), roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus bakeriHeuglin), tiang (Damaliscus korrigum tiangHeuglin) and oribi (Ourebia ourebia montanaZimmerman). Use in the meadows was estimated by the clipping of green forage available for the wild animals. Their diet botanical composition was determined by microhistological analysis. In addition, masses of faecal pelletgroups voided in the meadows were determined at the end of the dry season. Microhistological analysis showed that wild animals were either grazers or mixed feeders. The grazers were reedbuck, buffalo, waterbuck and tiang, and the mixed feeders were roan antelope and oribi. There was a significant correlation between biomass of forage used and faecal masses voided for buffalo (r2= 0.41,P<0.06), buffalo and tiang (R2= 0.35,P<0.05), buffalo and waterbuck (R2= 0.93,P<0.001) and waterbuck and tiang (R2= 0.31,P<0.005) at various meadows of the park. The rate of forage use across the meadows, however, was high for the waterbuck compared to that for buffalo and tiang.RÉSUMEÉLes prairies du Parc National de Dinder sont exploitées principalement par le cobe des roseaux (Redunca redunca cottoniW. Rothschild), le buffle (Syncerus caffer aequinoctialisBlyth), le waterbuck (Kobus defassa harnieri Murie), l'antilope roanne (Hippotragus equinus bakeri Heuglin), le topi (Damaliscus korrigum tiangHeuglin) et l'oribi (Ourebia ourebia montanaZimmerman). Utilisation dans ces prairies fut estimée par la coupe de fourrage vert disponible aux animaux sauvages. La composition botanique de leur régime alimentaire fut déterminée par analyse microhistologique. De plus, des quantités de crottes laissées dans les prairies furent déterminées a la fin de la saison sèche. L'analyse microhistologique montre que les animaux sont soit brouteurs (‘grazers’), soit mixtes (‘mixed feeders’). Les ‘grazers’ sont le cobe des roseaux, le buffle, le waterbuck et le topi; les ‘mixed feeders’ sont l'antilope roanne et l'oribi. SummaryA number of measurements were taken of 104 crocodiles at Ngezi, Zimbabwe. These were used to define the relationship between total length and eight other parameters, particularly those that are associated with size estimation during population surveys. The commonly used ratio between hindfoot (HF) spoor and total length is adjusted to 1:14 where HF150 mm. The accuracy of a ratio of 1:7 between head length and total length, used mostly during night counts, is established. Preliminary work suggests that these results are applicable to other populations.RÉSUMEÉUn nombre de mensurations ont été relevées sur 104 crocodiles à Ngezi (Zimbabwe). SummaryThe work was carried out in semi‐arid northern Kenya at Gatab (2°38′N, 36°56′E; altitude 1800m), Luai (2°36′N, 36°57′E; altitude 1350m) and Balesa Kulal (2°32′N, 37°04′E; altitude 650 m). The three sites have two rainfall peaks each year, in April and November. Thirty‐one plant species were individually presented to a total of twenty‐three grasshopper species. It was estimated that grasshoppers in this part of Kenya eat 2·2% of the primary production. The graminivorous and forbivorous grasshopper species ate significantly more grasses and forbs, respectively (P<0·001). Times during the day when feeding activity is high were shown to vary significantly between species (P<0·05) in three grasshopper species: one Pyrgomorphinae (Parasphena kulalensisKevan) and two Oedipodinae (Aiolopus thalassinusFieber andAcrotylus patruelisHerrich‐Schaeffer).RÉSUMEÉCe travail a été effectue dans le Nord semi‐aride du Kenya à Gatab (2†38'N, 36†56'E, alt. 1800 m), Luai (2†36'N, 36†57'E, alt. 1350 m)et Balesa Kulal (2†32'N, 37†04'E, alt. 650 m). SummaryMajor groups of the larger soil‐dwelling invertebrates were recorded weekly with non‐destructive observations for 2 years. Responses to forest clearance, season and added soil water were assessed. The assemblage of taxa varied only within narrow bounds over the 2 years. Most taxa were more frequent in the field from which forest had been cleared than in a remnant wood. Neither season nor soil moisture was significant in most cases. This component of the decomposition system is not sensitive to the clearing of forest, at least at the gross level of frequency of major taxonomic groups.RÉSUMEÉLes groupes principaux d'invertébrés souterrains furent enregistrés chaque semaine durant 2 ans par des observations non destructrices. Leur réponse à la déforestation, aux saisons et à l'humidité sont établies. L'assemblage des taxons n'ont varié que très légérement au cours de ces 2 ans. SummaryThe daytime activities of elephants (Loxodonta africana(Blumembach)) in theAcacia tortiliswoodland of Lake Manyara National Park Tanzania were monitored over two consecutive dry seasons in 1981 and 1982. The two methods used to assess the activity pattern were the point sample technique, with one sample involving several elephants, and the continuous observation method. A variant of the latter, the 5‐min interval method, was used with observations on one focal elephant each time. Activities were analysed with respect to time of the day and tree density in the study area. Chi‐squared tests showed that there was no variation of activities with respect to variousAcacia tortilisdensity categories. Elephants descend the escarpment every morning so that walking is a pronounced activity at this time. They rest in the woodland around noon and visit the lake shore in the evening before most of them return up the escarpment.RÉSUMEÉLes activités diurnes des éléphants (Loxodonta africanaBlumenbach)) dans les forěts d'Acacia tortilisdu Pare National du Lac Manyara en Tanzanie furent observées durant deux saisons sèches consécutives en 1981 et 1982. SummaryOn the inselbergs at the University of Ife Campus (7°31′N, 4°31′E), southwestern Nigeria are mat communities that are completely isolated from each other and have been shown to behave as real islands in their species–area relationships. The amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the vegetation and soil of fifteen of these communities on one inselberg were determined bi‐monthly through a growing season. These determinations were carried out by randomly selecting three or four mats at a time, clipping all vegetation and excavating the soil on each mat. The excavated soil was sieved to remove subterranean plant material and, after drying, all plant materials and soil were analysed for three elements, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The clippings and excavations were done in March (beginning of rainy season), May, July and September. The concentration of the three elements in the above‐ground plant material was highest in May for nitrogen and potassium and in July for phosphorus, and thereafter the concentrations of the three elements declined. Below ground, nitrogen concentration increased continually, phosphorus increased for some time then dropped while potassium was low in May and later increased. The concentration of nitrogen in the soil increased through the season, phosphorus fluctuated while potassium remained more or less constant. The mats could be valuable in understanding nutrient cycling and the relevance of the results obtained from this study is discussed.RÉSUMEÉSur les collines du camput de l'Université d'Ife (7†31'N, 4†31'E) au sud‐ouest du Nigeria se trouvent des communautés graminéennes complètement isolées les unes des autres qui se comportent comme de réelles ǐles dans leurs relations espèces/ espace. La quantité d'azote, de phosphore et de potassium dans la végétation et le sol de 15 de ces communautés sur une colline fut déterminée deux fois par mois durant une měme saison. Ces déterminations furent réalisées en sélectionnant au hasard trois ou quatre des ces communautés en měme temps, en y fauchant la végétation et en y extrayant de sol. Ce sol excavé fut traite pour extraire les parties souterraines des plantes et, après séchage, tant les plantes que le sol furent analysés pour mesurer l'azote, le phosphore et le potassium. Les fauchages et excavations furent réalisés en mars (début de la saison des pluies), mai, juillet et septembre. La concentration de ces trois éléments dans les parties aériennes des plantes fut la plus élévee en mai pour l'azote et le potassium et en juillet pour le phosphore; ensuite ces concentrations diminuent. En sous‐sol, la concentration d'azote augmente continuellement, celle du phosphore augmente un peu puis diminue, alors que celle du potassium est faible en mai puis augmente. La concentration d'azote dans le sol augmente tout au long de la saison, le phosphore fluctue et le potassium reste plus ou moins constant. SummaryNutrient and toxin analyses were carried out on wild foods that are eaten by the baboon (Papio cynocephalus(L.)) and black‐faced vervet (Cercopithecus aethiops(L.)) and other animals in Amboseli National Park, Kenya. Data are provided on proximate composition (water, ash, fat, protein, fibre, other carbohydrates), fourteen minerals, four vitamins (folic acid, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, β‐carotine) and a toxin (trypsin inhibitor). In total, 864 analyses were carried out on ninety‐one foods from thirty‐seven species of plants.RÉSUMEÉOn a réalisé des analyses des nutriments at toxines dans l'alimentation du babouin (Papio cynocephalus(L.)), du cercopitheque grivet (Cercopithecus aethiops(L.)) et d'autres animaux du Parc National d'Amboseli, Kenya.
