SummarySelection for particular areas and species by wild ungulates was assessed using ground survey and visual estimates of herbage removal through grazing. In general, the levels of herbivory were low (<5%), except in grazing lawns. TheCymbopogon validus‐Digitaria natalensisCommunity experienced the greatest intensities of herbivory. There were marked seasonal changes in the intensity and pattern of herbivory, with the inclusion of more species and necromass material during the dry winter months. This was influenced by fire. Species were grouped into response classes according to hypothetical changes in herbivore preference ratios with maturation of the sward following a fire.RésuméOn a estimé la sélection par des ongulés sauvages de zones et d'espèces végétales particulières en exerçant une observation au sol et en faisant des estimations visuelles de la quantité d'herbe broutée. SummaryLocal seasonal movements of the ungulates in Nyika National Park, Malawi, are mainly induced by the prescribed burning policy, habitat preference and weather.The populations of almost all ungulates have increased over the past 14 years except the zebra (Equus burchelli), whose population has stagnated. Eland (Tragelaphus oryx) is the most important contributor to the total biomass of the park's large mammals. SummaryHerbivory was studied in five different forest habitats (two virgin, two selectively felled and one exotic pine plantation) during 13 months by taking eight random samples of 50 living leaves from the forest floor vegetation per month. The leaves were classified in the field as untouched (0% consumed) or heavily damaged (over 25% consumed). The percentage of untouched leaves varied between 40 and 0·5% and of heavily damaged leaves between 25 and 0·2%. No clear seasonality in the amount of herbivory was detected. The exotic pine plantation had significantly fewer untouched leaves than two selectively felled forest sites, which differed significantly from each other in the percentage of heavily damaged leaves. Diurnal invertebrate herbivores from the same sites were collected by sweep netting. No clear correlations between leaf damage and the numbers of invertebrate herbivores were detected.RésuméOn a étudié l'herbivorie dans cinq habitats forestiers différents‐deux intacts, deux où des arbres ont été sélectivement abattus et une plantation de pins exotiquesen récoltant par mois, pendant treize mois, huit échantillons de 50 feuilles vivantes prises au hasard dans la végétation forestière. SummaryIn July and September 1987 a study of the distribution and abundance of bird species on Lake Naivasha was conducted with respect to lakeside habitat. From thirteen survey points around Lakes Naivasha and Oloidien seven habitat types were defined. Those habitats supporting submerged or emergent vegetation accommodated the greatest abundance and richness of birds. Species richness was possibly further enhanced by habitat complexity, and open shallow shorelines added variety to the avifauna by attracting species with relatively specialized requirements (mainly Charadriiformes). SummaryColony density and size, and numbers of white‐browed sparrow‐weavers were investigated inColophospermum mopane‐Julbernardia globiflorawoodland treated from nought to five times with DDT for tsetse fly control. Colonies were absent fromJulbernardiawoodland. Estimated densities in sprayed and unsprayed mopane woodland were 74 and 71 colonies per km‐2, respectively. Colony size varied with area and time but not with spray treatment. In 1987, colonies at the spraved northern end of the study area were twice the size of those in the unsprayed, drought‐affected south. Two years later, after good rains, colony size in sprayed and unsprayed areas was similar.Residues of DDT, DDD and DDE were measured in birds collected from sprayed and unsprayed areas 3,5,9,12,15 and 17 months after treatment. Residue levels in birds from the sprayed area fell from 3 months after treatment to reach background levels at 12 months. No adverse effects were noted. The most heavily contaminated bird contained 1083 μg DDT‐equivalents g‐1carcass lipid, less than half the maximum amount found in white‐headed black chatsThamnolaea arnotiand red‐billed wood‐hoopoesPhoeniculus purpureus, whose populations collapsed after spraying. SummaryNumerous investigations of spotted hyaena sociobiology in both southern and East Africa have failed to reveal any form of co‐operative breeding in this species. Herein is the first reported occurrence of allo‐suckling observed for this species. Explanations for this unusual phenomenon could include kin selection and social status, but it is suggested that a significant increase in cub mortality due to a prolonged drought led to this observation, which is a rare example of behavioural flexibility in carnivores.RésuméLes nombreuses investigations de la sociobiologie de l'hyène tachetée en Afrique de l'Est et du Sud n'ont pu découvrir aucune forme de coopération dans l'élevage des jeunes chez cette espèce. SummaryHatching synchronization and polymorphism in the eggs of black‐headed village weaver and Vieillot's black weaver were established from discarded egg shells on the University of Ife campus, Nigeria in the 1983 and 1984 breeding seasons. The frequencies of seven polymorphic egg types of the black‐headed village weaver in nine colonies were classified as: Light Blue with small specks (34·8%), Light Blue (28·5%), White with small specks (13·0%), White (11·3%), Light blue with large specks (7·3%), White with large specks (2·9%) and Dense Blue‐blotched (2·2%). The average widths and weights of the eggs of the Vieillot's black weaver (termed Immaculate Blue) were significantly larger than those of the black‐headed village weaver (t‐test,P<0.05). There were also significant differences (F‐test,P<0.001) in lengths and weights of four polytypic eggs of the black‐headed weaver. The didric cuckoo parasitized the nests of the Vieillot's black weaver more often than those of the other species. The eviction pattern of whole eggs from the nests was similar in both species. The most frequently evicted eggs were the most abundant forms in the populations.RésuméOn a établi la synchronisation des éclosions et le polymorphisme des oeufs chez le tisserin gendarme et le tisserin noir de Vieillot à partir des débris de coquilles ramassés sur le campus de I'Université de Ife, au Nigéria, pendant les saisons de reproduction de 1983 et 1984. On a classifié la fréquence de 7 types polymorphiques d'oeufs de tisserins gendarmes de neuf colonies: bleu clair tacheté. (34,8%), blancs tachetés (13%), blancs (11,3%), bleu clair avec grandes taches (7,3%), blancs avec grandes taches (2,9%), bleu intense marbré (2,2%). SummaryDetails of nest destruction patterns in the black‐headed village weaver and Vieillot's black weaver were recorded from three colonies on the Ife campus in 1983 and 1984 breeding seasons. Nests that were destroyed were classified into ten groups. The numbers in each category showed the presence of synchronized high and low peaks at bi‐weekly intervals. The intensity of nest destruction was markedly increased during the main breeding months from May to June. Nests unaccepted by the females were normally torn down by the males in two weeks and brooded nests in about six weeks. Large‐scale abandoning by the females of the completed nests accounted for a considerable part of the total number of destroyed nests. Nests were torn down in short bouts of from 3 to 30 minutes. Removal of nest materials by the neighbours caused minor destruction. Evidence is put forward to show that extensive nest destruction of the nests by the males is an obligatory response to prevent the oversaturation of the nest sites in the restricted territories.RésuméOn a rapporté des détails sur les schémas de destruction des nids chez le tisserin gendarme et le tisserin noir de Vieillot, sur le campus de Ife, pendant les saisons de reproduction de 1983 et 1984. SummaryInformation on condition, growth and reproduction was collected from a sample of 85 male lechwe from the Linyanti Swamp in northern Botswana. No significant seasonal variation in condition was found in lechwe males. Von Bertalanffy equations were used to document growth in body‐mass, body‐length, chest girth, shoulder height, neck girth and horn length. Spermatogenesis occurred by 1.5 years of age after attainment of a body‐mass>55 kg, a testis‐mass>15 g and a semeniferous tubule diameter>120 μm. There was an hiatus of perhaps three years between the onset of spermatogenesis and successful mating. In relation to condition, growth and reproduction, a number of sexual differences were documented, which were attributed to differences in the demands of reproduction and in reproductive strategies.RésuméOn a récolté des informations concernant la condition physique, la croissance et la reproduction, sur un échantillon de 85 cobes lechwe máles des Marais de Linyanti, dans le nord du Botswana.
