SummaryA geographic information system (GIS) was used to analyse field data on the abundance of elephant dung‐piles. For each country, the GIS was used to create contours representing distances from roads or rivers. The area of forest between each contour was then calculated. The curvilinear relationships between dung‐pile density and distance to the nearest road or village were then used to calculate the numbers of dung‐piles between contours and the total for each country. Comparisons between undisturbed and heavily poached elephant populations suggest that the total forest elephant population in central Africa has been reduced by about 44% as a result of ivory poaching. Forest elephants may be more vulnerable to poaching than previously thought because, for example, two‐thirds of Congo's elephants live within two days' walk of a road or navigable river.RésuméOn a employé un systéme d'information géographique (en anglais GIS) pour analyser les données sur la présence des excréments d'éléphants. Pour chaque pays, le GIS a servi à créer des tracés représentant les distances par rapport aux routes et aux riviéres. On calculait alors la zone forestiére comprise entre chaque tracé. Les relations curvilinéaires entre la densité des excréments et la distance par rapport à la route ou au village les plus proches étaient alors employées pour calculerle nombre d'excréments entre les tracés, et le total pour chaque pays. La comparaison entre les populations d'eléphants non dérangées et celles qui sont lourdement braconnées laisse penser que la population totale d'éléphants de forêt en Afrique centrale a été réduite de prés de 44%à cause du braconnage pour l'ivoire. SummaryBuffalo herd movements, home range and habitat selection were studied for 14 months in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, Transvaal, South Africa. The vegetation associated with the types of terrain was described in detail. Veld condition estimates and seasonal biomass changes were determined and used in the interpretation of habitat selection and home range data. The buffalo did not use the available habitat types in proportion to their occurrence and showed seasonal variation in habitat selection. Movement patterns were adjusted seasonally to accommodate various shifts in habitat selection and water availability. Although the buffalo had certain favoured grazing areas and routes between resource patches, they did not show a fixed pattern of range utilization. Buffalo herd movements and seasonal shifts in habitat selection ensured utilization of the most suitable habitat in the various seasons, which were not necessarily the best available.RésuméOn a étudié pendant 14 mois les mouvements d'un troupeau de buffles, son territoire et la sélection de son habitat, dans le Sabi Sand Wildtuin, au Transvaal, Afrique du Sud. On décrit en detail la végétation associée aux types de terrain. On a determineé les conditions approximatives du veld et les changements saisonniers de la biomasse et on s'en est servi pour interpréter les données sur la sélection de l'habitat et l'étendue du territoire. Les buffles n'utilisent pas les types d'habitats disponibles en proportion de leur abondance et font preuve de variation saisonniére dans la sélection de leur habitat. Le schéma des mouvements était ajusté en fonction des saisons pour adapter les différents changements de la sélection d'un habitat à la disponibilité en eau. Bien que les buffles aient certaines zones préférées de pâturage, et des trajets pour relier les points de nourrissage, ils ne présentent pas un schéma fixe d'utilisation du territoire. SummaryThe vegetation of the Pare National des Volcans in Rwanda has been exposed to a high biomass of herbivorous animals for most of this century. Consequently, it is composed of species of plants which can respond to the heavy pressure from the feeding and trampling activities of these herbivores. There are three large herbivores which currently cause the bulk of the trampling damage; the African elephant(Loxodonta africana),the African buffalo(Syncerus caffer)and the mountain gorilla(Gorilla gorilla beringei).Examination of the rates of regeneration of the vegetation after trampling by these herbivores showed little difference between the effects of buffalo and mountain gorillas; however, vegetation trampled by elephant took much longer to recover. Equations allowing the prediction of the area of vegetation trampled each day from the number of animals are calculated. On average, 1.5% of the vegetation shows some signs of permanent trampling damage although this varies between habitat types. It is calculated that 0.01% of vegetation is trampled daily by these herbivores in a 12.2 km2study region. Comparisons between these figures and the rate of regeneration show that trampling by these herbivores causes little reduction in the available biomass of vegetation.RésuméLa végétation du Pare National des Volcans au Rwanda a été exposée à une forte densité d'animaux herbivores pendant la majeure partie de ce siécle. Par conséquent, elle se compose d'espéces végétales qui peuvent répondre à la pression soutenue que font peser sur elle le pâturage et le piétinement de ces herbivores. Actuellement, il y a trois grands herbivores qui causent le plus gros des dommages de piétinement: l'éléphant africain(Loxodonta africana),le buffle(Syncerus caffer)et le gorille de montagne(Gorilla gorilla beringei).L'examen des taux de régénération de la végétation aprés le passage de ces herbivores montrait peu de différence entre les effets du buffle et ceux du gorille de montagne, mais la végétation piétinée par l'éléphant mettait plus de temps pour se rétablir. On calcule des équations permettant de prédire la surface de végétation piétinée chaque jour à partir du nombre d'animaux. En moyenne, 1,5% de la végétation montre des signes de dommages permanents dûs au piétinement encore que cela varie en fonction du type d'habitat. On a calculé que, pour les 12,2 km2que couvre cette étude, 0,01% de la végétation est piétinée chaque jour par ces herbivores. SummaryThe social behaviour and organization of red lechwe(Kobus leche lecheGray 1850) were studied for 2–5 years (January 1975‐June 1977) and were monitored for 75 years thereafter (until December 1984). Agonistic, territorial, sexual and maternal‐filial behaviour in lechwe were documented. The salient feature of red lechwe social organization in the Linyanti Swamp was that breeding occurred on clustered mating territories, which were resource based. Other findings included: (1) significant intraspecific differences in group size, which were attributed to factors other than those used by Jarman (1974) to explain interspecific variation in group size; (2) differences in the dynamics of territoriality in the lechwe populations of the Linyanti Swamp and the Kafue Flats, which were associated with ecololgical and demographic differences; (3) a prediction that lek‐breeding members of the genusKobuswould show a higher degree of sexual dimorphism than non‐lek breeding members was not unequivocally confirmed by a comparison of the Kafue and Linyanti lechwe populations.Résuméon a étudié le comportement et l'organisation sociale du cobe lechwe(Kobus leche lecheGray 1850) pendant 2,5 ans, de Janvier 1975 à juin 1977, et on les a ensuite surveillés pendant 7,5 ans, jusqu'en décembre 1984. Le comportement aggressif, territorial, sexuel et mére‐enfant a été bien observé. Le fait marquant de l'organisation sociale du cobe lechwe dans le Marais de Linyanti est que la reproduction se déroule sur des territoires d'accouplement regroupés, qui sont basés sur les ressources. SummaryDaily indirect observations were made on the diet and feeding habits of the black rhinoceros(Diceros bicornisL.) on Ol Ari Nyiro Ranch, Laikipia, Kenya over a six‐month period. Individual rhinos were followed along their feeding tracks, plants consumed by tracked animals were identified and herbivory quantified.In total, 9665 individual feeding points were recorded at 1967 feeding stations. At least 103 plant species from at least 37 families were identified as rhino food plants. The diet of black rhinos on Ol Ari Nyiro was at least as species‐rich as that in bushland habitats in Tsavo National Park and considerably more species‐rich than the diet of rhinos in Masai Mara Reserve. Black rhinos ate selectively and showed a marked reference forAcaciaspecies andPhyllanthus fisheri.They apparently fed less on each plant in the dry season than in the wet season. SummaryThe gastrointestinal tract of the horseshoe bat,Rhinolophus hildebrandti(Peters), was studied macroscopically, with the light microscope and with the scanning electron microscope. Macroscopically, the stomach was of the simple type and the intestine was a short convoluted tube with an almost uniform diameter. A caecum, an appendix and a colon were absent, and the only portion of the large intestine observed was a short rectum which had a distinctly greater diameter than the rest of the intestine. The proximal part of the intestine showed a brief ‘honeycomb’ segment preceding the ridge‐like transverse villi that occupied the rest of the foregut. In the region immediately proximal to the rectum the villi joined in a geometrical pattern to form chambers resembling ‘reticular cells’ of the ruminant stomach. The villi were covered with a prominent columnar epithelium occasionally interrupted by goblet cells. Generally, the intestine ofRhinolophusresembles that of the other bats which have been studied, but showed structural details suggestive of an increased surface area.RésuméLe tractus intestinal du Rhinolophe,Rhinolophus hildebrandti(Peters) a étéétudié au moyen d'un microscope simple et d'un microscope électronique.
