AbstractRegression and time‐series analysis are integrated to develop a short‐run price forecasting model for the retail prices of major nitrogen fertilizer materials. Time‐series analysis is conducted to generate future values of the wholesale price of anhydrous ammonia, the source of nearly all nitrogen fertilizers used in the United States. These forecasts are incorporated as an explanatory variable into regression equations to forecast the retail prices of five nitrogen fertilizer materials for the spring, the peak demand season for fertilizer. AbstractMonte Carlo simulation is used to compare the expected net returns and relative riskiness of alternative cropping strategies in Saskatchewan. The strategies include traditional fixed rotations and flexible ones that have been recommended by researchers. Three important conclusions follow. (a) Flexcropping based on available soil moisture at seeding time is the most profitable cropping strategy. (b) However, the value of measuring spring soil moisture depends crucially on the level of confidence the decision maker has in these measurements. AbstractThree strategies for hedging Federal Farm Credit Bonds were evaluated using data for March 1985 through March 1989. The barbell strategy presently used by the Farm Credit Bank's Funding Corporation and a price sensitivity strategy performed equally well for meeting the mean and variance standards employed in the study. The preferred hedging strategies identified could be used to advantage by the Farm Credit System for expanding use of fixed interest rate loans.

AbstractUsing dichotomous logit analysis, the study measures the effects of relative price perceptions and demographic factors on the probability of restaurant catfish consumption in the United States. The study uses data from the 1988 Southern Regional Aquaculture Center Consumer Survey.Relative price perceptions, income, race, religion, urbanization, and region are found to be significant determinants of the probability of restaurant catfish consumption. The probability of consumption is higher among consumers in urban areas and the Central regions and lower among low income consumers, Hispanics, Catholics, and consumers in the New England and Mid‐Atlantic region

AbstractThis research compares the 1990 rates and tariff structures of rural electric cooperatives with those of investor‐owned utilities operating in the Rocky Mountains and Southwestern United States. Results indicate that rates charged to residential and irrigation pumping customers differ by state, but not by utility type. The implication is that regulatory policies and costs have more impact on rates than does ownership form. A unique contribution of this research is its comparison of tariff structures. It was determined that, for residential customers, tariffs of rural electric cooperatives are more complex than tariffs of investor‐owned utilities, but that the tariff structure does not differ by utility type for irrigation pump
