AbstractMultinationals exercise market power in international grain trading activities and affect the volume and direction of trade flows. A high degree of integration in the cereals and cereals substitutes sectors and diversification in other sectors allow companies to undertake a wide range of strategies, such as global strategic behaviour and transfer pricing, which influence the international grain trade and the effectiveness of trade polices. Such influences may be identified in a new framework of analysis, by taking into account different ways in which foreign direct investment occurs. © 1993 John Wiley&Sons. Inc

AbstractInformation concerning retail price response to quality characteristics is useful when evaluating where fruit with different levels of quality characteristics should be marketed. This article shows how price/quality relationships for produce vary between different types of retail outlets and explores several hypotheses explaining these differences. The results of the analysis confirm the hypothesis that prices at produce markets are more responsive to quality characteristics than prices as supermarkets. Independent markets are responsive to some quality characteristics, time of season, and location, while chain markets show little price response to quality characteristics. © 1993 John Wiley&Sons, Inc

AbstractThe fuel ethanol industry relies heavily on the adoption of new technology to reduce its production costs and maintain competitiveness with substitute oxygenates. This article identifies new innovations which are likely to be adopted in the next 10 years. These innovations are incorporated into model plants of 1996 and 2001 and production cost savings over the present is estimated.

AbstractThis article uses agency concepts from modern business and finance theory to evaluate how the significant restructuring of the Farm Credit System, resulting from legislative enactments of the 1980s together with market, institutional, and technological factors, has changed the role of the farm credit banks in controlling the System's agency costs. The intermediation and service roles of the farm credit banks are evaluated in light of the glowing size and stronger lending capacities of the System's lending associations, and other recent developments. Policy implications for the future structure of the Farm Credit System also are considered. © 1993 John Wiley&Sons, Inc

AbstractSurvey data from 311 garden centers, landscapers, and combined garden center/landscaping firms in selected western US trade centers were factor analyzed. Six first‐order factors of product and service attributes were identified: plant selection, product information, supplier services and knowledge, advertising and promotion, plant quality, and ordering services. These six first‐order factors were collapsed into three second‐order factors: buyer‐oriented services, buyer perception of supplier reputation, and sales support. These classifications of plant supplier attributes can be incorporated by the astute supplier into a successful business strategy. © 1993 John Wiley&S

AbstractAgricultural cooperatives have undergone significant consolidation in recent years. Identifying firms with a potential to improve performance via merging requires an examination of financial performance of those firms relative to firms of similar and larger sizes. This study develops a set of financial performance measures relative to firm size to identify cooperatives with the greatest potential to improve performance from merging. AbstractEconomists studying markets for organic produce and proponents of organic agriculture have often assumed that organic produce has more defects than conventional produce and that consumers buying organics are exchanging visual quality for perceived food safety and environmental benefits. Analysis of primary retail‐level data on quality for eight organic and conventional produce items found no statistically significant difference in quality for most products. The results provide evidence that the assumption that organic produce is necessarily of inferior visual quality is unwarranted. © 1993 John Wiley&Sons, I
