AbstractA cost‐minimizing spatial model of the US grain marketing system is used to evaluate impacts of locational changes in the demand for US grain exports. The major grain exports are included in the analysis. Total supply and demand are held at representative levels as the location of export demand is incrementally reallocated. Analysis focuses on how major US port area grain flows are altered to accommodate each alternative demand scenario. Additional analysis is conducted to determine if existing port capacities are sufficient to handle increased grain flows associated with the export demand reallocation

AbstractThis study found that the equalization tax has a positive effect on both price and quantity of orange juice sold. Elimination of the tax would likely lead to reduced orange juice demand and industry revenue. Elimination of the tax would not likely lead to a substantially improved competitive position given Brazil's flexibility in pricing. Neither the Florida citrus industry nor the State of Florida would benefit from an elimination of the tax.

AbstractThe foreign exchange value of the US dollar has had a major impact on agricultural trade flows in the 1980s. However, measurement and interpretation of the appreciation of the US dollar must be done with caution. In this article, three different methodologies (Paasche, Laspeyres, and Fisher Ideal) are used to calculate a trade weighted foreign exchange rate representing six flows of US export goods (total exports, all nonagricultural exports, all agricultural exports and wheat, corn, and soybeans individually). The indices are calculated for both real and nominal foreign exchange rates. Implications for agricultural trade are suggested by applying these estimates of the dollar appreciation to previously estimated elasticities of US agricultural export demand with respect to the foreign exchange rate.

AbstractMuch opportunity exists to increase economic returns from the artificial insemination, dairy sire selection decision. This article measures potential returns to producers with alternative objective functions, management and financial characteristics. The costs of wrong decisions from incorrect information are measured by differences between alternative sets of top‐20 Holstein sires selected from more than 400 available. AbstractChanges in crop production activities resulting from farm programs and policies alter the demand for inputs. This article discusses a statistical method by which regional input responses may be analyzed before aggregate impacts on farm production and income are forecast. Researchers and decision makers may anticipate projected changes in input markets based on the observed regional deviations of input use levels from national average quantities as explained by crop location and distribution effects. An example of pesticide use changes after implementing a conservation reserve program illustrates the value of incorporating regional variation factors into the analysis of impacts on agricultural input industries.

AbstractThe effect of output price risk on soybean crushing margins is determined. The results show crushing margins increase as risk increases indicating soybean processors are risk averse. Thus, soybean processors with better risk management strategies may have a competitive advantage. Policy implications are that the increased margin from risk should be incorporated in evaluating benefits of price stabilization programs.

AbstractMarket structure's influence on price‐cost margins was explored in each census year over a 23‐year period in food manufacturing. The positive relationship between price‐cost margins and both four‐firm concentration and product differentiation, as measured by a media advertising‐to‐sales ratio, became stronger over time. The reverse was true for the relationship between plant economies of scale and price‐cost margins.
