AbstractThe potential of marketing a branded, low fat, fresh beef product was studied. Consumers were receptive to the test product and were willing to compromise on taste for a product that was perceived to be healthier. Opportunities appear to exist for a range of beef products targeted at selective consumer segments. The test marketing procedure did not include alternative price levels for the product.

AbstractCattle kill floor operations were analyzed using sample data to determine the impacts of unionism on productivity at the plant level. No significant union effect either negative or positive was found, possibly because of the limited union role in setting wages and the wide variation in personnel practices irrespective of the union status of the plants. Large productivity differences observed among the sample firms require other explanations.

AbstractFive wineries ranging in size from 10,000 to 900,000 gallons were analyzed as to investment and operating costs and the impacts of changing product and input prices on their relative financial attractiveness. The larger wineries, while being more costly to establish, offer lower per unit operating costs and greater financial returns. The returns to smaller wineries tend to be more sensitive to wine or product prices than grape and input prices.

AbstractEPA examines the benefits and risks of an agricultural pesticide's use when deciding whether or not to cancel its registration, but often neglects two effects which could change the decision: (1) the distributional effects on farmers using and not using the pesticide, and (2) the interdependence among regulatory decisions. This article examines the economic implications of banning several corn and soybean pesticides, highlighting these two concerns. Generally, banning one pesticide could have little effect, but banning all pesticides for a pest problem could have substantial effects. However, some pesticide users could suffer significant losses even though the aggregate effects are small.

AbstractHarsh and inaccurately forecasted economic conditions placed stresses on the Farm Credit System (FCS) and caused the organization to incur losses beginning in the mid‐1980s. In recent years, the FCS has been neither more nor less able to avoid problem farm loans than commercial banks. But, because of the composition of the FCS portfolio, the problems of the FCS are more severe than those of banks. AbstractIn April 1986 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved low level irradiation of fresh fruits and vegetables for insect control and delayed ripening. The Department of Energy (DOE) is interested in establishing six food irradiation research facilities in the US. This article provides a background on food irradiation and identifies the research issues likely to become important as food irradiation becomes commercial.
