AbstractThis article evaluates Japanese response to agricultural export embargoes instituted by the US. Direct response was limited to establishing a small government stock of soybeans and initiating modest overseas production development following the 1973 soybean embargo. Neither action had any significant impact on Japanese agricultural imports from the US. Japanese farm policy does not appear to have changed in response to US embargoes. The embargoes, on the other hand, have provided farm groups with an additional argument to delay changes in a costly farm policy that has been fundamentally shaped by domestic forces.

AbstractThis study develops theoretical models of leasing from the perspectives of both the lessor and lessee. The models address effects of tax distortions and imperfect debt markets on the value of leasing. Analysis of the broiler industry shows that leasing is an important financing consideration for broiler houses and equipment which can benefit both the lessor and lessee because of the tax and debt market environment.

Traditionally, the technical and economic feasibility of the technologies have been evaluated, but marketing aspects of the products generated have been ignored. AbstractAddressing the lack of information on the demand for specific aquaculture species, this article presents the results of a cross‐sectional analysis of consumer demand for commercial pond‐raised catfish in Louisiana. Results indicate that size of household and Catholic religious preference positively influenced the consumption of pond‐raised catfish. However, children present in the household negatively influences the household's expenditures for pond‐raised catfish fillets. The number of years that a household has resided in Louisiana is positively associated with expenditures on catfish. Empirical analysis also indicates that catfish fillets are perceived to be an inferior good in Louisiana, which agrees with previous research
