AbstractThe future competitiveness of central and eastern European countries will depend, to a large part, on the strategies chosen for the privatization of their agricultural sectors. This article develops a heuristic framework to test alternative privatization strategies against criterion variables important for market competition and for achieving certain social objectives. The framework is tested against privatization of the Hungarian wine industry and indicates that the industry may be less competitive than planned. The analysis suggests how the approach can be used in other sectors and countries. © 1994 by John Wiley&sons, Inc

AbstractThis study is concerned with the issue of planned marketing policy and its impacts upon the patterns of food‐grain consumption. The quantitative estimation is carried out using dummy variable model and effects analysis. The results indicate that the regional differentiation is the significant characteristic in the Chinese food‐grain consumption. Without substantial improvement both of the effectiveness of the governmental policies and the efficiency of marketing operation, the regional differences seem to be a long‐term feature of the patterns of food‐grain consumption in China. © 1994 by John Wiley&s

AbstractThe determinants of the provision of health benefits to full‐time farm workers in Virginia are investigated using farm‐level data. Health benefits are associated with higher wages on Virginia farms, while the provision of housing tends to lower wages. Agricultural employers must compete with other labor markets for workers on a wages and benefits package. Agricultural employers can also compete for workers by offering housing, a benefit not offered by other employers. © 1994 by John Wiley&sons,

AbstractThe recent breakup of the Soviet Union has brought hope and opportunity to many Americans. It has also brought the possibility of new competition to some US agricultural and resource‐based industries. Recent concern in the western regions of the United States and Canada has centered on the increased possibility of salmon exports from the Russia Far East to traditional Western markets fueled, in a large part, from Russia– Japanese joint ventures. A dynamic econometric model of the world salmon markets was utilized to simulate future Russian salmon export scenarios. It was found that the Alaska pink salmon industry may suffer devastating consequences from increased Russian exports of pink salmon while the sockeye industry will suffer somewhat less from increased Russian exports of sockeye salmon. © 1994 by John Wiley&sons,

AbstractFollowing the Free Trade Agreement and a ruling from the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, wineries in Ontario, Canada, have had their market opened to considerably greater foreign competition. This article provides observations drawn from their experiences that managers elsewhere will find useful when thinking about adjusting their business strategy to deal with a more open market. The three principal observations elaborated in the article are (a) that government protection creates an artificial environment which, because it is artificial, does not last, (b) that the business strategy appropriate when a market is protected can prove inappropriate when protection is removed, and (c) that open markets are more demanding when making strategic choices. © 1994 by John Wiley&sons, Inc
