摘要:
AbstractA framework for examining the competitiveness of firms in the food and agribusiness sector based on the firm's view of the vertical production‐marketing system is offered‐ Recent examples are used to illustrate the evolution of perspectives employed by firms in the sector away from the producer towards the consumer. The need for a systems perspective in addressing competitiveness is stressed throughout the article. Areas for further research are sugges

摘要:
AbstractThis article presents new data on the level and trends in private sector R&D on food, agriculture, and agricultural inputs. Private food and agricultural R&D grew about 4.6% annually between 1960 and 1986. The growth rate went down to 3.8% between 1980 and 1986. Much of the decline was accounted for by the decline in agricultural machinery R&D. Research divided by sales increased during the 1980s, indicating that the slowdown in R&D growth was due to the slowdown in sales rather than mergers or decreasing productivity of R&D.

摘要:
AbstractThe social accounting methodology compares budgets based on private costs and returns to budgets based on the social values of inputs and outputs. The differences between these two budgets indicate the taxes and subsidies associated with policies or market imperfections. This methodology has been extensively used in analyzing policies in less developed countries. This article demonstrates through examples the application of the methodology to the analysis of competitiveness and efficiency of agribusiness firms and sectors.

摘要:
AbstractRural entrepreneurship is one of the foundations of rural economic development. However, rural entrepreneurship has only recently been defined and few major research studies have been attempted. This article analyzes current research on rural entrepreneurship, examines current strategies and programs in the area, proposes a unified public‐private approach to rural entrepreneurship, and suggests an integrated program to support rural entrepreneurship in the United States. Such a program would strengthen the competitive opportunities for rural areas in the United State

摘要:
AbstractComparative hypotheses are statistically tested for a random sample of Texas producers who perceive themselves as profit maximizers and those who do not. Those who assert that they are in the cow—calf business primarily to maximize profits have on average larger herd sizes and acreage, they earn a greater percent of their total net income from farming and ranching, and they place more emphasis on supportive economic motivations and less on social reasons for owning cattle. Off‐farm employment status and the qualitative response to changes in price expectations are not unambiguously related to perceived motivati

摘要:
AbstractA market window analysis was constructed to analyze the market potential for vegetables grown on reclaimed phosphatic clay in Polk County, Florida. Weekly new returns averaged over an eight year period in nominal and real terms were used to identify market windows. Five vegetable crops, cabbage, cucumbers, peppers, and several types of squash and sweet corn were included in the analyses. The results indicated that cabbage, white sweet corn, cucumbers, and crookneck squash may be economically viable for production on reclaimed phosphatic day in Central Florida.

摘要:
AbstractIn representing dairy production as a function of herd management decisions, veterinarians and animal scientists have generally neglected variations in worker performance. This article presents a model that includes organization and personnel management as determinants of dairy operational results. Herd production and manager interview data from 87 farms in Tulare County, California, indicated that these management factors are related to both milk output and herd reproduction efficiency. Manager assumptions about worker motivation, regularity of employee performance feedback, and use of records explained significant variation in fat corrected milk production, somatic cell count, average days open, and services per conception. The study suggests that greater attention to organizational and personnel management could improve results of dairies as well as other agricultural businesses.
