AbstractThe increasingly competitive situation facing managers of farm supply and grain elevator businesses has made management of their business's strategy increasingly important to successful performance. Strategy of these businesses is examined here using linear regression. Businesses that earn higher returns on assets are found: to be more diversified in product lines, to do a better job of controlling general expenses, to have fewer assets, to be in areas of lower crop production, and to be proprietary rather than cooperative organizations.

AbstractFrom 1978 to 1987 the US food‐marketing industries were in the throes of an historic merger wave that greatly eclipsed the previous three merger waves. Neoclassical economics, which assumes profit‐maximization is the motive for mergers, and managerial utility are the two competing explanations for merger behavior. Empirical tests have so far been unable verify the neoclassical paradigm, which leaves managerial hubris as the principal explanation for mergers. AbstractThe traditional seed handling industry has faced substantial variation in local demands for field crop seed quantities and varieties during the last decade or more. Seed handling firms in Georgia were surveyed to elicit market structure and conduct information and to ascertain issues confronting the industry. Concerns included perceptions of structural changes in the seed handling industry following the Plant Variety Protection Act (1970). Patent law may be expected to contribute to further structural changes in the marketing of seed inputs.

AbstractThis article investigates the price transmissions of specific pork cuts between wholesale and retail markets. It examines retail price rigidity and symmetry in relation to changes in wholesale prices. Results indicate that different cuts possess different lag lengths. There is also some evidence that retailers react more quickly to increasing wholesale prices than decreasing wholesale prices; however, the cumulative effects are very similar.

Congressional adoption of farm credit legislation is hypothesized to depend on the financial performance of the farm sector. AbstractThe impacts are examined of import charges and fuel costs on the relative costs of supplying US markets from Florida and Brazil and of supplying imported FCOJ via Florida and non‐Florida ports. There are two import charges, the US Tariff and the Florida Equalization Tax. The former is found to provide considerable protection against imports, while the latter's main effect is to place Florida importers at a marked disadvantage to those in other areas of the country.
