AbstractConcentration of sales among the leading manufacturers changed sharply in some relatively undifferentiated food processing industries in the 1980s. In six industries examined, CR4increased 23 points, on average, from 1977 to 1988. Mergers accounted for virtually all of the concentration increase in three, and roughly half of the increase in the other three. Overall, internal growth accounted for about one‐third of the increase in concentration in the six industries. The relaxation of antitrust enforcement during the 1980s likely encouraged several large horizontal mergers that significantly increased concentration in these industries. AbstractThe results of a systems estimate of the South Korean meat sector are presented. The system is well behaved in that it satisfies the theoretical restrictions. Some of the parameters of the demand system are then used to simulate the effects of trade liberalization in the South Korean beef sector. The results indicate that South Korea would reduce its trade surplus by as much as $800 million by 1999 if its beef sector was liberalized. The principal beneficiaries of this liberalization would be the United States and Australia.

AbstractCompetitive food manufacturers and processors must establish and maintain a high level of product quality. Statistical quality control (SQC) is a tool for establishing quality standards and measuring deviations from these standards. Cost variance analysis is an accounting technique that measures the importance of deviations from production standards in terms of firm level objectives. The method presented in this article links quality control and cost accounting by (a) defining quality standards based upon the firm's profit maximization objective, and (b) measuring the importance of nonstandard quality by its effect on profit. The method is compared to traditional cost accounting techniques.

AbstractTwo demand systems incorporating habit formation and time‐varying parameters but using two different product differentiation schemes are estimated to analyze the demand for wine in Ontario and assess the effect of complying with a GATT ruling calling for the phasing‐out of a 65% discriminatory mark‐up differential between domestic and foreign wines. AbstractExpansion of the soybean production and marketing capacity in Argentina and Brazil has resulted in a declining share of the world market for US soybeans and products. Recent policy changes made in these South American countries may affect their competitive position relative to the United States. Policy changes in both countries are analyzed to determine their expected impacts on the US soybean complex. Results indicate that while the United States may maintain its competitive position, Argentina should become more competitive and Brazil may decline in competitiveness relative to the other two countries. Implications of these results for the US soybean complex are noted and discussed.

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to examine the employment mobility patterns of male and female agricultural graduates. A 30% random sample (n = 5,049) was selected among agricultural students who had attended 1862 southern land‐grant universities during 1977. A mail survey conducted with agricultural alumni in 1987 resulted in 2,049 respondents.
