摘要:
AbstractLabor productivity growth in the agribusiness sector represents a mixture of strong and weak performance. While labor productivity growth on United States farms has been considerably above average for several decades, the record of performances of labor productivity in food retailing, transportation, food service, and selected food processing industries has been poor. Opportunities for both systems wide and firm level improvements in productivity are outlined. Improved productivity growth in the agribusiness sector of the United States economy can contribute to a lower inflation rate, improved competitiveness of American food and fiber producers, and an increase in the standard of living, among other benefits.

AbstractThis article evaluates potential change in Central Plains grain logistics systems, focusing on a supply area in northwest Kansas and export markets at the Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Coast. Employing a network model, total efficiency gains as well as changes in storage and transport costs are measured. Specific logistical changes that are evaluated include construction of trainloading facilities (subterminals) and increases in rail rates. Construction of subterminals results in substantial system cost savings and nearly all export wheat moves through the subterminal‐unit train marketing channel. AbstractThe measurement of selling effort in the food processing industries has improved in several ways. An FTC data set on both advertising and promotional expenses is used to estimate some determinants of variations in the intensity of selling effort. They are found to be related to market sales concentration, the number of brands being sold, elaborateness of packaging, and product perishability. A second analysis finds that the intensity of food‐manufacturer selling efforts is nonnegatively associated with grocery wholesalers' or retailers' gross margins. The latter finding challenges the view that manufacturer advertising provides information that ultimately benefits consumers through lower retail price

AbstractThe impact of beginning equity, credit limits imposed by lenders, and changes in land values on farm survival, changes in equity position and farm success (measured by the probability of a positive net present value of returns) are evaluated. Whole‐farm, Monte Carlo simulations for Texas part‐owner and tenant rice‐soybean operations were completed over the period 1984 through 1988. Results indicate that extending additional credit to part‐owner and tenant operators in a high debt position (over 50%) will allow continued operation, but continued operation significantly increases the likelihood of a loss of farm equity and loan losses to agricultural lenders. AbstractThe current trend to boxed beef is supported by this study of 10 different retail beef handling systems when both costs and returns are considered. However, on a purely cost basis the least costly system was for the retailer to centrally cut beef at his/her warehouse. AbstractRetail food sales tend to decrease systematically as the time since payday increases. While the pattern of weekly sales is similar from store‐to‐store, the percentage variation of sales from the first to the last week of the month is greater for stores with low income customers than for similar stores with higher income customers.
