AbstractA survey of Illinois agribusiness firms was used to identify factors that have a positive or negative influence on expansion or contraction decisions. The most positive factors for expansion, and the most negative for contraction, relate to perceived market conditions. State development incentives were found to be ineffective. The most negative factors toward expansion related to worker's compensation laws and insurance costs, as well as other factors more directly under the control of state laws. © 1995 John Wiley&Sons, Inc

AbstractAbout 34% of Malaysia's rubber and over 50% of its palm oil and cocoa are currently produced under the plantation system. The distinctive features of the Malaysian plantation system lie in its bureaucratic structure, its employment of a large labor force, and its systematic application of scientific principles to agricultural production. This article reviews the evolution of the plantation system in the Malaysian context and presents cost components for a sample of 75 rubber estates to illustrate the distinctive features in the plantation system. Results from a previous study to show the role of management, both its short‐run and long‐run aspects are presented. The contributions of the plantation system to the economic development of Malaysia are discussed. © 1995 John Wiley&Sons,

AbstractCharacteristics of pork packing firms pursuing a competitive strategy of product differentiation are described. Such a strategy requires a consistent, highquality raw material. Three strategies to sort pork carcasses and primal cuts in the packing plant are detailed. A multivariate simulation replicated two distributions (based upon genetics) of hogs that a focus‐differentiation packer might purchase: an average industry distribution and a lean, more uniform distribution. The results indicated that the leaner distribution had more loins and hams within the packer's desired weight range which provides an economic incentive to focus‐differentiation packers for procuring leaner hogs. © 1995 John Wiley&Sons,

AbstractDynamic structural changes in the flour milling industry have resulted in fewer and larger firms, larger plants, and increased concentration. A number of features in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) could have an impact on strategies and competition in this industry. This article has three objectives. First, structural characteristics of the flour milling industries in each country, policies, and other competitive factors are described. Second, important fundamental changes from the US/Canada Free Trade Agreement (CUSTA) and NAFTA are described. Apparent changes in firm strategies since these agreements are highlighted and analyzed. © 1995 John Wiley&Sons, Inc

Abstract“Elite specialized interviewing” was used to analyze the socioeconomic and political forces that shape French agricultural policy. France has been the dominant influence in the formation and evolution of the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Much of the delay in completing the Uruguay Round of GATT has been caused by agriculture, in particular France's opposition. Agriculture is an affair of state in France. The farmers' organizations, despite the decreasing number of farmers, remain powerful. French farming has undergone dramatic structural and social change. Two contradictory but powerful policies are driving French agriculture: the task of maintaining farm population and improving the standard of living of the farmers (rural vocation); and the task of modernizing farms and reducing farm population (export vocation). © 1995 John Wiley&Sons,

AbstractThis article analyzes the comparative advantages and disadvantages farmer cooperatives may have in coordinating the marketing of agricultural commodities through the market channel from the farm level to the processed product level. The distribution of risks among producers and integrators under contract integration is discussed, and factors related to the ownership, capitalization, and governance of cooperatives that may limit their vertical expansion are evaluated. Although contract integration by cooperatives may offer some advantages, efforts by cooperatives to limit their financial risks and the market risks of producers could significantly redefine the nature of these organizations and their relationships with members. © 1995 John Wiley&Sons, Inc
