摘要:
AbstractThis article presents a review of the agribusiness management research activities completed since World War II. The authors present their estimate of the relative emphasis of research completed in eight subcategories of agribusiness management research. Also included in this article is a review of the research activities structured into four time periods. 1945–1955, 1956–1969, 1970–1981, and 1982 to the present. The final section identifies five major types of barriers currently inhibiting agribusiness management research and presents potential ways to overcome these limiting fa

摘要:
AbstractMany tasks one performed by markets are being carried out by large and complex business organizations. Consequently, the question of how to design effective organizations is an important research issue. This article explores existing research on the design of organizational structures for what it teaches about developing priorities for research on agribusiness management. It concludes that the theory of structural design implies that different designs may be required for agribusiness organizations which operate under different conditions than general business organizations. Specific research topics designed to examine whether and why this may be true are developed.

摘要:
AbstractThe historical development of research on production and operations management was traced from its roots in firm cost and efficiency studies through systems analysis research. This research made an important contribution to improved performance of firms. Reasons for the sharp decline of research in this area were examined. One reason relates to the fact that research problems had less direct relevance to the firm. Information needs of firms and others were examined. This provided the basis for identifying needed research. While a number of research problem areas were described, two were discussed in depth: comparative performance information and expert systems.

摘要:
AbstractMarkets and the agricultural delivery system are examined in terms of the emerging areas of biotechnology and international competitiveness. These areas represent significant new researchable topics of importance to agribusiness. A second general aspect of agribusiness marketing research identified is understanding vertical linkages within the delivery system, especially the role of cash markets and the performance of various risk management strategies. Implications are drawn for priority research in agribusiness marketing.

摘要:
AbstractSince 1970 several new theories and alternative interpretations have challenged the traditional industrial organization view of market competition. These range from the superior efficiency view of the Chicago school to theories of strategic groups and behavior. An important opportunity exists for empirical research to test these alternative views. This research is particularly appropriate for public researchers interested in agribusiness management since it has clear implications for both the public and private sectors.

摘要:
AbstractManagement information systems (MIS) provide information to support management activities. Key research issues related to MIS in agribusiness firms are identified in this article. Four themes in MIS research are first reviewed: the relationship between organizational design and MIS design, decision support, database design and data resource management, and MIS planning and management. MIS problems faced by small and large agribusiness firms and by information providers are then described. Finally, research opportunities in three broad areas—information systems analysis and design for small firms, design and development of MIS components, and markets for information products and services—are discus

摘要:
AbstractTopic areas for research on problems of financing agribusinesses were suggested. Priority research areas identified included: (1) implications of federal taxation policies, (2) impacts of the 1986 tax law changes on the attractiveness of leasing as a method of acquiring assets, (3) inadequate equity capital sources for small and intermediate sized firms, (4) identification of factors that motivate individuals and/or companies to provide capital to new or expanding firms, (5) understanding entrepreneurial knowledge and behavior in regard to financing decisions, and (6) analysis of the interactions between forms of business ownership and financing alternatives. The research needs and opportunities were discussed for each of the identified topic areas.

摘要:
AbstractModern, multidisciplinary models of strategic management are presented. Model types and the planning process used at the functional, strategic business unit, and corporate portfolio levels are contrasted. Applicability of traditional research areas in agricultural economics to strategic management and planning is high and should be exploited. A research agenda is outlined and consideration given to issues of research funding, clientele, and organization.

摘要:
AbstractThe evolving field of agribusiness research is viewed in light of the potential for interdisciplinary arrangements. Special emphasis is placed on the role of agricultural economists. An historical perspective of multidisciplinary efforts and a review of joint research traditions of agricultural economics are given. Special opportunities for new work with managerial science scholars are illustrated with a research agenda. Some organizational considerations are discussed. Encouragement is given for more professional attention to agribusiness research.
