摘要:
AbstractAustralia, with its bountiful resources, has been referred to historically as a place where bad businessmen could survive. No longer is this true, particularly in agribusiness. Needed education has been too limited, too farm‐oriented, and too lacking in coordination among educational institutions, especially agricultural and business schools. Recently an open dialogue on this issue has developed by those in education, industry, and government. This is encouraging, and this conference can build on that. Thus, the conference is important and timel

摘要:
AbstractAgribusiness change in Australia and New Zealand, as in the United States, can be classified into five groups:more complexity, growing out of the global network, futuristic notions, world economic development trends, and public‐private institutional arrangements;more concentration, especially growing out of takeovers and greater vertical integration to practical farm markets;more competent, growing out of professional management, technological acceleration, and a large number of improved individual country food sector strategies;more competitive, growing out of more demand driven thrusts, an increasing number of world food suppliers, and overcapitalized farm production in advanced countries; andmore compromised, growing out of the increased minority position of farmers and broader political coalitions in which they must operate. These changes beget conflicts which provide a vital laboratory for the practice of modern agribusiness managemen

摘要:
AbstractThis article builds a historical perspective for agribusiness education, primarily through the legacy of the Land Grant System in the US. Wallace points out that the legislation that provided for agricultural education in the US (namely Morrill, Hatch, and Smith‐Lever) has been amended and has evolved over time to include many activities other than production agriculture. Also included in the historical perspective on agribusiness education is the evolution and role of the business schools. Finally, Wallace discusses the need to understand and participate in agribusiness leadership effort

摘要:
AbstractThis article discusses the degrees offered and important elements of agribusiness education programs in New Zealand. Ross describes historical success of the Valuation and Farm Management Diploma (VFM) previously offered at Lincoln and the current programs at Lincoln and Massey. This article also presents a provocative discussion of the needs of agricultural education at the bachelors and post graduate levels. Ross presents the concept of the use of technology as an important unique aspect of agribusiness education.

摘要:
AbstractFor a major agricultural country, Australia has had a mediocre performance in adding value to their agriculture production base. Major changes are making it more probable that Australia will more effectively compete. Key changes in the globalization of business are in communication, transportation, world money markets, labor skills, labor relocation, and accelerating technology. Globalization of agribusiness is “leveling the agricultural playing field”. Global demand shifts favor Australian agribusiness. Current improvement in Australia's position comes from urbanization of Asia and the restructuring of the Soviet food system. The challenges for Australia's agribusiness are great, but most can be converted into opportunit

摘要:
AbstractThis article presents the results of the Agribusiness Management Aptitude and Skill Survey (AGRI‐MASS) in Australia. The national survey of 345 Australian agribusiness managers, was conducted to complement a similar study conducted in the USA by Litzenberg and Schneider (1988). As with the US study, respondents to the survey were asked to score 74 personal and professional attributes in six major categories, required for successful careers in agribusiness. The survey data enabled the authors to rank order the attributes and draw conclusions about the importance of categories of attributes as perceived by different sectors of agribusiness in Australia. The rank order was very similar to that found in the US study. Interpersonal and communication skills were rated very highly by future employer

摘要:
AbstractThe agribusiness sector should be renamed the food and agribusiness sector. The importance of consumers in modern society mandates that food institutions on the consumer end of the chain have greater emphasis. The historical emphasis on farm production and first handlers is out of date. Educational needs for careers in the food and agribusiness sector are unique. This is true because of the distinctive characteristics of the sector as developed in this article. Some three undergraduate and three graduate courses of study are now available to students for agribusiness careers. These courses of study need serious consideration in light of the broader redefinition of the sector. This is particularly true with regard to broader use of modern business management education and with regard to the historical preeminence of economic theory in agricultural economics education.
