摘要:
The leaching of Elliot Lake ore by nitric acid was investigated as an alternative means of extracting uranium. The rate of growth and the nature of radium-bearing sediments from the leach liquor were studied by examination of filtered sediment with scanning electron microscopy. The sediment was found to contain elemental sulfur and Fe- and Si-containing precipitates, and to contain as much as 68% of the radium after aging 2 days at 5°C. Coprecipitation with natural barites or with BaSO4precipitated about 95% of the radium, leaving a leach liquor containing <20pCi/l of radium.

A study of nonvolatile bituminous residues and coal materials by pyrolysis gas chromatography has been undertaken. The objective is to determine the coal and the coke precursors in a residue from the coprocessing of coal and bitumen. This was investigated by quantifying eight model aromatic compounds and their coeluting compound groups in the pyrolysis products. Five samples consisting of Cold Lake coke, nonvolatile bituminous residue obtained from coprocessing Forestburg coal with Cold Lake bitumen, Forestburg coal, and a residual coal from liquefaction were pyrolyzed from ambient temperature to 900°C, and the volatile products were analyzed by gas chromatography. Hydrocarbons up to C7have been detected in the gas region of the pyrogram, methane being predominant. The wide variety of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons produced by pyrolysis of these samples arise from the cleavage of their highly condensed aromatic structures. Naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene were abundant in the Cold Lake coke. On the other hand, indole and fluoranthene predominate in the Forestburg coal. Residual coal resembles Forestburg coal more than other nonvolatile residues.

摘要:
Information about differences in flame characteristics and consequent modifications required on combustors is essential to combustion engineers for using low-calorific-value gases in place of conventional fuels. This paper presents an experimental study directed to determining the changes in flame characteristics of gas-jet flames when the heating value of the fuel stream is decreased. Both burner-attached and lifted-off flames have been investigated. The reported data include flame length; temperature profiles; flame radiation; and concentration profiles of fuel, pyrolysis species, major products of combustion, and environmental pollutant species (particulates, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide). The practical implications of the results are also discussed.
