ABSTRACT.The incidence of bacterial colonization of peripheral artery cannulae in 58 sick newborn infants was documented using a semi‐quantitative culture technique. Of the 86 cannulae inserted, a positive “high‐density” semi‐quantitative culture not related to distant bacteraemia and indicative of local infection was found in nine cannulae (10%) and “low‐density” colonization was found in one cannula (1%). One of the 58 infants died from cannual‐related septicaemia and meningitis due toKlebsiella pneumoniae.Bacterial colonization was significantly more common in cannulae which had been present for more than seven days compared with cannulae present for seven days

ABSTRACT.The effects of increasing the concentration of supplemental vitamin D was studied in two groups of ELBW infants (babies with a birth weight less than 1000 g) during the periods of July 1977 to December 1979 and throughout 1980. There were 21 ELBW infants in the first study period, with 7 infants developing active or Stage III rickets. A prospective study of ELBW infants during 1980 revealed 3 infants out of the 12 studied developing active or Stage III rickets. A new radiological classification for rickets of prematurity, Stage I to IV, is presented. Serial serum alkaline phosphatase levels were then compared with these radiological stages and a serial ALP of 500IU/l was found to be statistically significant in the biochemical diagnosis of rickets. As a result of our findings, we suggest that all ELBW should be supplemented with at least 800 IU of vitamin D daily.

ABSTRACT.In order to determine the usefulness of theophylline in the management of apnoea of prematurity, a double blind trial was carried out by using six bottles of solution, three of which contained theophylline and the other three contained a placebo in the same base as theophylline. The incidence of apnoeic episodes diminished within 6–12 hours of commencement of therapy in 10 of 15 patients in the theophylline group with no further episodes over the next 48 hours in contrast to no response in 11 of 14 patients in the placebo group (P<0.01). Treatment with a known solution of theophylline (following failure in the trial) resulted in termination of apnoeic spells in 8 of 11 patients in the placebo group and in 1 of 4 patients in the theophylline group. ABSTRACT.A case report of a 920 g infant developing a small intestinal obstruction following therapy for congestive cardiac failure is presented. Although the causation was thought to be milk curd obstruction, subsequent analysis revealed high concentration of calcium and phosphate in the stools.The possible pathogenesis is discussed in relation to the inspissated milk syndrome.
