Iodide induced goitre and hypothyroidism in infancy and childhood.The dangers of excessive administration of iodides in pregnancy and childhood are illustrated by a goitrous infant born to an asthmatic mother and an asthmatic adolescent girl who developed myxoedema. Both the mother and the girl had been taking potassium iodide (Kl) in the form of an aminophylline Kl mixture. The possible mechanisms of iodide‐induced goitre and hypothyroidism are discussed and recommendations given on the therapeutic use of iodide

Fatal motor vehicle accidents involving Australian children.A comparative Australian study of childhood motor vehicle traffic accident fatalities is reported. The Australian rate (0–14 year olds) is 10.33 per 100,000 population at risk; this ranks very high in the Western world. Age and sex specific rates by States are presented. Data on two particular types of fatal traffic accidents involving children (run‐down accidents, and intervehicle crashes) have been compiled, and accident rates presented by State. False negative sweat tests with apparently adequate sweat collections.Sweat tests collected on two or more occasions from normal children and children with cystic fibrosis have been analysed according to the weight of sweat collected. A controlled trial using intravenous infusions of soya emulsion in the treatment of children with cystic fibrosis. Five children with cystic fibrosis were given repeated intravenous infusions of soya oil emulsion (Intralipid) for 12 to 18 months and the effects on growth, health, sweat chloride and pancreatic enzyme activity compared with a control group. No beneficial effect was demonstrated and it is recommended that this form of therapy has no place in the routine treatment of children with cystic fibrosis. It is possible that treatment may have modified the degree of weight loss noted after 12 months of age. Neonatal Bacteriuria — The value of bladder puncture in resolving problems of interpretation arising from voided urine specimens.During a study of neonatal bacteriuria in 1460 infants born consecutively it was found that 76% had either sterile urine, or less than 10 × 106organisms/1 (10,000 organisms/ml) in a single ‘clean catch’ specimen.To establish the level of bacteriuria in voided specimens which correlates with bacteriuria obtained by aspirating urine suprapubically, check bladder punctures were carried out. This was done in infants with varying levels of colony counts obtained from voided specimens. No bladder puncture specimens showed evidence of infection when the colony count on the voided urine culture was less than 10 × 106organisms/1. When the colony count on the voided urine culture was between 10 and 100 × 106organisms/1, 2.2% of bladder puncture urines showed evidence of infection. When the voided urine colony count exceeded 100 × 106organisms/1, 11.1% of bladder punctures showed evidence of infection. There was no significant correlation between baoteriuria and pyuria or proteinuria.While repeated collection and culture of ‘clean catch’ urines may reduce the Ca fusion due to contaminated specimens, this approach can be time consuming.
