Balance studies of 9 elements during complete intravenous feeding of small premature infants.During the course of a study of complete intravenous feeding of premature infants weighing less than 1,050 g, metabolic balance studies were performed on 4 surviving infants for 5 major nutrient elements: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus; and 4 trace elements: iron, zinc, copper and manganese. These studies determined the amounts retained when these elements were given intravenously.There was a significant correlation between the input and retention of each of these elements except zinc, and the data obtained have been used to derive tentative recommendations for the rate of infusion of these elements into the small premature infan

Autoantibodies, immunoglohulins and hepatitis B antigen in children with chronic liver disease.Smooth muscle antibody, mitochondrial antibody, serum immunoglobulin levels and hepatitis‐B antigen (HBAg) were measured in the sera of 20 children with extra‐hepatic biliary atresia, 8 with intra‐hepatic biliary atresia and 6 with post‐hepatitic (neonatal) cirrhosis. Smooth muscle antibody was not found in any patient with post‐hepatitic cirrhosis, but was present in 4 of 20 patients with extra‐hepatic and in 4 of 8 with intra‐hepatic biliary atresia. Serum immunoglobulins, particularly IgA. were elevated in the presence of cirrhosis. Serum IgA was markedly elevated in those infants with hepatic decompensation. No patient had mitochondrial antibody, despite the presence of prolonged extra‐ or intra‐hepatic biliary obstruction. HBAg was negat

Extreme hypernatraemia in a child receiving gastrostomy feeding.A 2‐year 7‐month‐old child with oesophageal atresia developed extreme hypernatraemic dehydration after being given hyperosmolar feedings in a fixed volume via gastrostomy. His thirst had been met by increasing his sham oral intake and no water was added to gastrostomy feeds.When medical intervention removes a patient's ability to respond normally to homeostatic demands, hypernatraemic dehydration must be anticipated and those caring for the patient instructed how to correct this deficiency. The parents of a child with a long‐standing gastrostomy must be aware of the need to make appropriate corrections to the feedings in response to the child's indication of hunge

Tasmanian infant feeding survey, 1974.Information on infant feeding practices were collected during a one‐month period in 1974 throughout Tasmania. Child health sisters interviewed 394 mothers of 3 months old babies born between March 31 and April 27, 1974.
