Abdominal scans using99mTc pertechnetate were performed on 41 patients (7 adults and 34 children) suspected of having a bleeding Meckel's diverticulum. Fourteen of these patients subsequently had laparotomies and a Meckel's diverticulum was found in 7 of the children. Two other children were found to have duplication cysts of the small intestine containing ectopic gastric mucosa. The scans successfully demonstrated both duplication cysts and all but one of the Meckel's diverticuli.

A consecutive series of 71 childhood snake bite incidents is reported. The children were admitted for suspected or confirmed snake bite to four hosptials in south‐east Queensland in the 5‐year period 1971–1975. Toddlers (1–3 years) constituted the most common age group involved. Information on predisposing factors leading to the bite was available in 33 cases; in 75% of these the children were not provoking the snake, which contrasts with the findings from adult series. The snake was seen in 58% of cases, and felt but not seen in a further 16%. Lay identification was made in 18% only. Definite puncture marks were present in 73% of cases. In 73% of victims there were no observed constitutional signs or symptoms whatsoever suggesting, in practice, that bites are generally by snakes of low potential danger. Seventeen per cent showed signs of envenomation. Antivenene was used in two cases. One fatality occurred, but the rest recovered without sequelae. In two of the 71 cases an effective tourniquet was

Infant health and breast feeding during the first 16 weeks of life.The relationship between the method of infant feeding and health during the first sixteen weeks of life was examined in a cohort of 1,210 children.Totally bottle‐fed infants had four times the risk of consulting a medical practitioner for gastrointestinal disturbances when compared with totally breast‐fed infants.Breast‐fed infants had significantly less gastrointestinal and respiratory illness irrespective of medical attendance. However, when social background was taken into account, the relationship between breast feeding and respiratory illness became nonsignificant.The mortality rates and risk of hospitalisation for respiratory infections and gastrointestinal illness were unaffected by the method of feeding.Although breast feeding remains the optimal form of infant nutrition, the results of this study show that the benefits are marginal in a developed community in terms of illness in early in

Dried milks available for infant feeding in Hobart, Tasmania, were analysed by flame emission and atomic absorption spectrometry for the major elements Na, K, Ca, and Mg as well as the trace elements Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Sn, Cd and Pb. Protein was determined by analysis for nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method. Results are expressed in terms of weight of powder and normal dilution in water as used for infant feeding. Several of the milks varied in composition from the manufacturers' specifications. Although toxic trace elements were present in the dried milks, their concentrations were well within normally acceptable limits of safety. Results for random samples of cow's and human breast milk are given for comparison.

Some maternal and child developmental characteristics associated with breast feeding: A report from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Child Development Study.A study of some maternal, experiential, and developmental characteristics of 1037 three‐year‐old children who were breast fed for varying lengths of time was described. The results indicated that those children who breast fed longest had advantaged mothers and more developmental experiences. When these differences were controlled by matching breast fed with non breast fed children, there were no significant advantages in developmental status found consistently to characterise the breast fed children. It was concluded that alleged “probable” developmental benefits to children from breast feeding should be more properly considered “

Experience in a growth and development clinic. Chromosomal defects.Of 908 children seen at a growth and development clinic over an 11 1/2‐year period almost 4% were found to have a chromosomal defect. Most of these defects involved the X chromosome. There were 11 females with 45,X abnormality and 12 with other X chromosomal defects. The latter were diagnosed at a later age because their physical features were less obvious than those of the 45,X patients. The findings indicate the need to carry out chromosomal studies on all short females. Additional indications for such studies include females with inguinal hernia, males with small testes or unexplained mental retardation, males or females with genital abnormalities and, occasionally, children with unusual facial appearance or unexplained physical defect
