An account is given of the climate, vegetation and native pastures of the beef‐cattle regions of Argentina. Though some of these native pastures have a satisfactory carrying capacity, most of them are defective in quality or low in productivity; there is considerable scope for increasing production through the establishment of sown pastures. Trials have been made with a wide range of grasses and legumes, principally of African and European origin. Though the pattern of species to be used in these regions is imperfectly resolved, the authors present a map showing tentative boundaries for temperate, sub‐tropical and tropical species. Work to date suggests that pasture development can probably proceed over great areas without the use of fertilizers, and this adds to the attractiveness of pasture programmes. Seedlings of perennial ryegrass were grown in soil and growth was studied up to 21 days from sowing. The shoot grew exponentially during this period. The weight of the whole plant fell to about 65% of the original weight of the caryopsis at about 9 days from sowing and did not regain this original value until about 16 days after sowing. Endosperm reserves were virtually exhausted within 14 days.The interval between the 7th and 14th day appears to be critical in the establishment of the seedling, when conditions adverse to the development of a rapid rate of photosynthesis by the shoot could severely reduce seedling growth and the chances of survival.

Trials are described in which barley was compared with a concentrate containing barley and groundnut cake, both concentrates being used to supplement silage. An increase in milk yield was obtained when the compound concentrate was given to the cows, which may be attributable to an inadequate supply of protein in the silage/barley ration or to the effect of supplementary protein on silage intake.

The use of grazing‐time records for the estimation of grass species consumption was investigated in the context of two small‐plot grazing trials. It was found that sampling errors were significantly lower than those involved in the cutting techniques used and that a high level of repeatability of results could be obtained.The overall correlations between fresh‐weight yield estimates from sample cuts and grazing records for individual plots were found to be 0·57*** and 0·72*** in the two trials. The bias that was introduced into some of the estimates of species yield appeared to be corrected through the use of palatability data.It is concluded that the use of grazing‐time records for yield estimation amongst species of broadly similar growth habit may have a definite potential in tropical Africa, but that the method requires further testing before being widel

Three‐year leys of cocksfoot/white clover and cocksfoot alone were dressed with 0, 35, 105 and 210 lb N per acre every year to provide information on the effect of clover and N on production.Data from the grass‐alone swards allowed an estimate to be made of the effect of N on production at different cutting dates. This was compared with the effect of clover.The effect of N was greater than that of clover in the mid‐ and late‐season cuts. Clover made its greatest contribution, both directly and indirectly, at the first cut, taken in May.Under very dry conditions (1959), N was more effective than clover in maintaining production and the proportional response was large in relation to that produced under moist conditions.The results are discussed with reference to the present seasonal use of N on grassland and an argument is advanced for increasing its use in mid

A study has been made of the relationship between the content of coumarin and its related compounds in the leaves ofAnthoxanthumspecies. In the two speciesA. pueliiandA. amarum, which headed without low‐temperature or short‐day induction, successive mature leaves on the main shoot were studied: they showed a general increase in the content of coumarin and related compounds up to the flag leaf which had a maximum value.InA. odoratum, which was non‐heading when grown under the same experimental conditions, the distribution of coumarin and related compounds was examined during the life of individual leaves from emergence to senescence. Each leaf showed a similar basic pattern: a peak value for coumarin occurred at maturity, which coincided with an initial peak value for related compounds. With senescence the coumarin value in each leaf fell, but the related compounds, after an initial fall, now increased in concentration and attained a maximum at senes
