摘要:
Risk-taking behaviors generating an element of physical danger typically accompany the average infant's developmental ascent to the erect position and bipedal ambulation. Exploration based on physical risk-taking may be critical to increasing a child's radius of experience and knowledge of the physical world. Temperament and maternal attachment are thought to influence exploratory behavior, but motor competence and its relationship to exploration and risk-taking have not been examined in young children. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between motor skill level and risk-taking behaviors associated with exploration in toddlers. Motor skill level was assessed in 25 Caucasian children, ages 12–24 months, by means of the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales. Exploratory behavior and intensity of risk-taking behaviors were recorded by means of time-sampling methods. Temperament and security of attachment were evaluated using standardized parent report instruments. A significant relationship was identified between risk-taking behavior and motor skill, suggesting that systematic incorporation of risk-taking behaviors in physical therapy programing may have a positive impact on motor skill level.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to identify the role of physical and occupational therapists in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to determine the extent to which standard practice of these professionals in the NICU conforms to the best practice standards identified in the literature. This study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 examined the global role of physical and occupational therapists in the NICU. Phase 2 focused more specifically on the therapists themselves by examination of: direct and indirect service provision; treatment approaches and techniques; skills; experience and educational levels; and other administrative information. Phase 1 used a survey mailed to 709 NICUs nationwide, and an interview was used in phase 2 to collect data from a group of 20 randomly selected physical and occupational therapists who responded to the initial survey.Discrepancies existed between the standards of best practice presented in the limited literature and the current practice standards as reported by the participants in this study. Additional training, continuing education, communication, and research are necessary to insure that therapists can achieve a level commensurate with standards of best practice when treating infants in the NICU.

摘要:
The study was performed to gather initial descriptive information about the practice of equipment adaptation (EA) within pediatric physical therapy, as reported by a random sample of 500 members of the American Physical Therapy Association -Section on Pediatrics. Of the 288 therapists who responded to the survey, 33% work in a school system, and 49.7% spend 10% or less of their total working hours in the area of equipment adaptation. Chi-square analyses of the relationships between client characteristics of age, disability type, and severity level and EA characteristics of equipment and materials used and tasks (ie evaluation, consultation, design, etc.) were significant, as was the relationship between client severity level and hours spent in EA by respondents. Further studies are suggested to define the pediatric physical therapist's role in EA.
