摘要:
The pitch of a cholesteric liquid crystal can be inferred from (1) the distance of the Grandjean lines in a wedge tylpe sample1; (2) the angular dependence of Bragg-scattering,2and (3> the wavelength of maximum reflection.3The present paper reports a simple method for determining the pitch based on transmission measurement. It can be particularly valuable in the infrared, i.e. a pitch range of about 0.5 to 5μ, where reflectance measurements are difficult

The polarized green fluorescence of 9-cyancanthracene crystals is reanalysed and found to be structured. The green emission is progressively weakened by irradiation, and becomes replaced by a blue fluorescence.

摘要:
Recent studies of electron paramagenetic resonance in γ-irradiated anthracene1–4indicate that the origin of the EPR signal is a radical in which the unpaired electron is coupled to three nearly equivalent protons. Harrah and Hughes2and Inoue3have proposed that the dibenzocyclohexadienyl radical, formed by the addition of one extra hydrogen atom to the 9 or 10 position of an anthracene molecule, gives rise to the observed spectrum. From the annealing kinetics of the EPR signal, McGhieet al.5conclude that a bimolecular reaction is the dominant mechanism for radical recombination.
