摘要:
Gel permeation chromatography has been performed using a porous glass of broad pore size distribution, which was subjected to hexamethyl-disilazane treatment. The elution volumes and peak widths of narrow molecular weight distribution polystyrenes using toluene as solvent have been determined. The physical characteristics of the porous glass have been studied by the methods of mercury porosimetry. nitrogen ad-sorption-desorption isotherms, and electron microscopy. The characteristics of this column packing material are compared with other packing materials in popular use.

Gel permeation chromatography has been effectively used for the fraction-ation of residuals. The preparative-scale gel permeation chromatograph employed for these studies is described along with selected operating parameters. The instrument has been used to fractionate a shale oil residue, 50% reduced crude, and 25% reduced crude, into fairly narrow molecular weight fractions. The individual cuts from each residual have been analyzed and the elemental distribution established. The trends of heteroatom distribution, i.e., nitrogen, sulfur, nickel, and vanadium, as a function of molecular weight for the various residuals are discussed.

It has been shown that proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of fractions obtained by gel permeation Chromatography techniques can yield significant information in the characterization of petroleum residuals. Application of empirical relationships developed for the analysis of NMR spectra is shown to be useful when applied to gel permeation Chromatography fractions. Whole residues and a deasphaltened fraction have been separated and studied. Unit weights and aromaticities have been obtained by NMR and compared with molecular weights from vapor pressure osmometry measurements. In addition, supplemental information from infrared and mass spectrometry on GPC fractions has been used to characterize a “neutral” portion of the residue.

摘要:
“Fingerprint” chromatograms of crude oils have been obtained using a simple gel permeation chromatographic system with a differential re-fractometer as detector and tetrahydrofuran as solvent. The elution time is less than 1 hr using a sample size of about 6 mg and the repeatability is good. When toluene is used as solvent, a different profile is obtained which is again unique for each crude oil.

Gel permeation chromatography was used to obtain molecular weight distributions of asphaltenes from 5 wells before and after steam injection. These wells all produce from the same horizon in one Kern River, California, field. A standardQ-mode correlation analysis showed no significant relationship of stimulation response to any of the molecular weight data, i.e., molecular weight distribution before, immediately after, or 200 days after treatment. A standardR-mode analysis showed a significant relationship of the slope of the molecular weight curve before stimulation with the slope just after stimulation, but not with the slope200days after stimulation. The wells that returned the least amount of oil per barrel of water injected as steam produced asphaltenes after stimulation very deficient in high molecular weight compounds. It is inferred from this that these materials precipitated within the formation and are restricting flow. At the other extreme, the change in asphaltene molecular weight profile from the most successful stimulation job can best be explained by the introduction of new production sources into the oil flowing towards the well. This is consistent with this well's having received the greatest quantity of steam.

Three hundred grams of a Venezuelan asphalt was separated on a 70-liter GPC column in one run. The 30 cuts collected were consolidated to 7 fractions. After separating the insoluble asphaltenes from the soluble maltenes byn-pentane extraction, the maltenes were chromatographed on deactivated alumina into oil and three different resin fractions. Selected fractions were analyzed by NMR, IR, density, and elemental analysis. The experimental results were evaluated by a novel method making use of an extensive scheme of structure relations. Percentages of aromatic, naphthenic, and paraffinic carbon; number of ring systems per molecule, their average size, compactness, composition, and substitution are given explicitly or implicitly.
