摘要:
The nickel cyanide-ammonia complex forms clathrate compounds with aniline, benzene, pyridine, pyrrole, and thiophene. The structure is tetragonal and the unit cell contains atoms corresponding to twice the formula when benzene is enclosed in nickel complex. Each benzene molecule is comparatively remote from nickel atoms. It is contained in a cavity where it makes contacts at van der Waals distances with other benzene molecules and with atoms of cyanide and ammonia groups. It is not linked by chemical bonds to the nickel complex. The clathrated molecules in this system are easily evolved when the compound is ground or heated to high temperatures. These clathrates are not particularly stable systems. The stability and decomposition of nickel cyanide-ammonia clathrates are described.

摘要:
Radioactive markers in ion exchange chromatography of amino acid mixtures of biological samples is one of several methods used to identify a particular amino acid. It is shown that in fractions of column effluents-C14-labeled amino acids can be detected relatively easily and economically by liquid scintillation or gas flow systems. The interference of the small quantity of labeled amino acid required to give a significant counting rate with the color yield of the amino acids under investigation has been shown to be negligible.

Precipitated cyanide, complexed with Fe(II) at a molar Fe/CN ratio of 0.550, can be floated readily from aqueous suspension with a cationic surfactant, ethylhexadecyldimethylammonium bromide. The effects of three distinct mixing times of significance in preparing the precipitate and contacting it with surfactant, of pH, of initial cyanide concentration, of initial surfactant concentration, and of ionic strength have been established experimentally. Mixing times and the initial cyanide concentration have little influence on the flotation, while increases in pH and ionic strength have a most pronounced influence, part of which can be overcome with increased surfactant concentrations. At pH 6.0, 95% of the complexed cyanide can be foam separated from distilled water suspensions 1.5 to 3.1 mMin total cyanide. About 0.04 mole surfactant/mole complexed cyanide is required; about 0.08 mole/mole is required to increase the flotation to 99% or to overcome ionic strength effects.

Ionic charge and size of the species present govern the selectivity of surface adsorption of counterions in foam fractionation processes. A theory based on the Gouy-Chapman model of the diffuse double layer, with the restriction that the closest approach to the surface is determined by the finite size of the hydrated ions, enables one to predict the distribution factor of each species between a solution of mixed electrolytes and a surface layer, and to calculate the selective adsorption coefficient between two ions. Good agreement was found between the theoretical prediction and experimental data.

An equation is presented that predicts the number of inputs required to produce a step-function (frontal) output in countercurrent distribution (CCD). When a portion of both phases is transported during experiments, the published equations for CCD are inappropriate. Expressions have been derived that predict the properties of elution and frontal outputs when biphasic flow occurs. When phase volumes and partition coefficients vary during the course of the distribution, computer simulation of the process, using the appropriate ternary phase diagram becomes necessary for adequate prediction of solute profiles. Shifts in position, shape, and height of frontal outputs and the nature of excess lower phase in the effluent are predicted and compare well with experimental results.

摘要:
Procedures are described for extracting glucuronic acid and sulfuric acid conjugates from animal urine by using a nonionic type of adsorption chromatography. A chromatographic column (Porapak Q coated with trioctylamine) was developed to take advantage of nonspecific adsorption characteristics of these compounds on anion-exchange columns. The separation procedure provided sufficient cleanup of the conjugates to allow for their chromatography by other chromatographic methods.

摘要:
A fast and selective method is proposed for solvent extraction of manganese with tributyl phosphate. It is possible to quantitatively extract manganese with 40% tributyl phosphate in xylene from solutions containing 1Mhydrochloric acid and 2.5Maluminum chloride as the salting-out agent. The metal from the organic phase is stripped with water and is determined photometrically as its complex with formaldoxime. The probable composition of the extractable species at 1Macidity is [MnCl2·3TBP]. It is possible to extract manganese in the presence of a twentyfold excess of common ions, but mercury, copper, iron, bismuth, and vanadium interfere. The standard deviation is ± 1.05%.
